Curiosity kills the cat

Since I only have a SPL I don't get Notams etc I might be a bit out of touch with all the latest screwings of the Ewings and other a/c related legal matters.
That said, a whole bunch of MPL's at Worcester Flying School are doing convex to PPL rating, currently busy with the exams. Upon enquiry the one instructor informed me that it's only a matter of time before all "3-axis" MPL will have to convert to PPL standards wrt flying hours and theory standards, but trikes don't have to. He also had a bit of a tongue twister with Light Sport Aircraft license thrown into the conversation, maybe a little confused himself

Now this sounds really strange and I was curios, surely this is nonsense!

There is a new law which should come into affect as soon as either 1) Aero Club gets their arse into gear 2) someone takes over from Aero Club.

Its called Part 62, and will deal with licensing of all things not stricktly speaking falling under your standard Private Pilots' licence or other "high level licence  " like CPL and ALTP

Included in this is Microlight Flex Wing, Microlight conventional control, Gyroplanes, Hang Gliders, Paragliders.

The proposal of "Light Sport Aircraft licence" is a brand new initiative, and if the current rate of change is anything to go by, it might or might not be in place in about 10 years or so  :?

So no, it is not going to be any time soon that microlights will have to step down to PPL theory level. In fact, everything will probably be gray and in limbo for as long as this is sunny SA (^^)

Microlight pilots will continue to see the best views from anyone in the pilot seat in SA, and seat of the pants flying will rule over procedures for a long time to come :D :D

For years now the industry has made becoming a pilot more and more difficult, the result a decline in the industry. The simple licenses i.e micro grew on the other hand. Recently the EAA in the USA introduced Sport Pilot Licence (SPL) Now there is a surge of new aviation interest in 3 axis and a lot of new pilots again. What it will do for safety only time will tell. But I think it is a step in the right direction.

Make flying simpler but ensure the machines match the category. Don't make it more difficult, but don't expect a SPL to fly a hot ship. Hence the sport pilot aircraft rules!

Regards
Rudi

You must come in from the Boksburg side, because when you enter there they ask if you have a gun and if you don't they give you one.

Strange, GR8-Dad - I'm a SPL and I get Notams. Got my last set about two weeks ago.

My problem was going from a MPL to GPL (.Gyro pilots license)
I had to do all my NAV tests over and did not get any credit for 130 hours on a 3-axis micro light. If I had a PPL it would have been a conversion to a Gyro Plane license. I also had to write all the exams, but at least I got credit for my radio license.

I probably have to keep both licenses current or risk losing one.

Under Part 62 I would have one license with a GPL and MPL rating.

R U sure? I was told 25 hrs and all over again. Not a convex, but new license from scratch.

t bird, please advise if it only a convex, as I would then like to do it ASAP before part 62 comes into effect....

RV I think it is correct. Check with cloudbase, he is the SAGPA chairman.

To do a whole license to fly a gyro is ridiculous.

Take off is a bit more difficult.
Landing – round out is lower and there is a huge reduction in speed.

Once you are in the air there is no difference in flying with a PPL,MPL and GPL

Why would you need to do –
Mets
Human performance
Navigation

Principals of flight – There is some changes but mostly the same as 3-axis
