Microlighters

Call for participating Pilots and your creative ideas!

For some time now I am toying with this idea and working on a concept for producing a TV reality / adventure / game type show with a strong "aviation" element, involving microlights. It must be an unique show promoting Microlighting in South Africa but also have a mix of adventure, survival with a strong competition element without compromising on safety but most important showing and introducing some beautiful SA destinations all over SA to the viewers in 13 half hour or hour episodes. (What better way than to show this from the air) Well known TV shows like Survivors, Amazing Race, Fortuin soekers, Fear Factor etc comes to mind. Seeing that the proposal is going to KykNet the show will unfortunately be in Afrikaans (so if Demon and friends want to participate, they will have to learn to fly in Greek ) The proposal and complete budget must be ready by 12 July 2012 for submission and I am about 70% there.

I'm thinking of 6 to 10 teams of 4 people each. Each team consisting of 1 pilot, 1 navigator(this can be a celeb or not) in the microlight with a ground support team of 2 people. (a certain motor manufacturer already indicated their interest in sponsoring some nice off roads) Each team will receive cryptic clues about an unknown destination and between the air and ground team have to communicate these clues to arrive at destination at a given time. Like with Microlight competitions a difficult navigating task including identifying photos and match them on the ground will hopefully secure on time arrival at the correct place where the ground team will be waiting with fuel and food. Either the ground or air team slip up will mean no food no petrol no tent no nothing. Suffer and survive for the night is the name of the game, unless they found an immunity idol (did a spot landing or flour bomb the bulls-eye), they face elimination from the next round. Nail biting experiences and spectacular views of our country from the air are supposed to keep the viewers glued in front the TV for 13 episodes. Trikes will be rigged with 3 cameras and sound each so also the ground vehicles and a cameraman at the departure and destination points.

There are endless ideas and I can't wait to see what some of you will come up with. What do you guys and girls think? Let those creative juices flow! Please PM me or post your suggestion and indicate if YOU are available and up for the challenge.

Marius, what about certain tasks that must be completed at a certain point before you can take off again? Could be anything from finding the co-ords for your next destination in a sandpit or building a puzzle with a clue on. A team quiz could be held about the part of the country where you are. Getting it wrong could result in a time penalty.

Skin, Demon and Bulletjie you catch my drift. Bulletjie they will have a choice of eating pig balls and just get the co-ords or go hungry and search for them in the sand. I like it!! keep em coming guys!

Great idea Marius! Certainly if all these other reality shows glue people to their tv's, this can also do it. Name the show? Difficult one, Miskien iets soos Vlugplan Vlieeniers. Definitely one of the most important factors of making something like this a success. The name must already draw the viewer. I realy hope this takes off. It has definitely got the potential to top some of these other shows. Like fresh breath of air, something different. We'll discuss over a cuppa, Marius.

Are the pig balls going to be served with a sweet and sour cream? Other tasks that can be performed is rigging and derigging of a wing.
Block out instruments and set a target of let say 600ft agl. With a gps in the saddle bag it could be determined who got the nearest to that.

Hope you didn't injure yourself Ducky. I don't want to be pushing you around in a wheelchair at Oshkosh.

Keep the ideas coming so I can finalize the game plan by Monday. Maybe to make it more interesting the aircrew and ground crew will figure out the cryptic clue to destination separate. They receive an envolope each and after take off while circling the field they open the clue and figure out where to go and no coms with ground crew from here until they meet again at destination. Also another aspect of staying in the game is they can earn money to try and stay in the game. Starting of with say R500 (a tank petrol) and by doing spotlandings in the box and completing tasks successful they earn R500, R250, R100 etc. So they stay in the game until the money dries up and no more fuel to continue. At this stage they fold up the wing and microlight and team leave the set on trailer back home?
