2012 – 4th Edition

Sport and competitive aviation

The SASCOC Presidents council meeting was held over the weekend of 12 & 13 May and some interesting developments were tabled that will affect us as the National Federation for aviation in South Africa.

Firstly, all Federations have to re-apply to continue with their status as National Federations, whilst they will be required to comply with a host of new criteria. Those sporting federations that do not re-apply will have their status removed, which will result in the inability to issue National Colours. The areas of concern are the T & D programme, developments of coaches and the promotion of women in our sporting codes. AeCSA will be discussing this development at Board level.

Secondly, it was made abundantly clear that we have a ‘dying lottery’ as disposable funding is under pressure and average incomes have declined from R9 million to less than R3 million.

Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD 2012)

The Fun fly park is underway with sections needing to confirm their participation. This will involve ‘Acts and Demonstrations’ within the arena. This entitles placing a manned stand with information about your specific aviation discipline. Watch this space.

AeCSA Safety Campaign

The AeCSA Safety campaign development is underway. Poster design is close to completion and video contributions of case studies and views of what is regarded as safe flying will commence Thursday 10 May at the Aero Club offices.

The pledges were received by some donators and we would like to thank them for their generous donations. We are confident that this campaign will reduce the number of accidents in the aviation industry. The Department of Transport (DOT) will be putting its weight behind the campaign and hopefully funding assistance as well. The launch of the campaign will be in Johannesburg on Friday 15 June 2012.

Presidential honours for Scully Levine

Scully, a long-time friend of the AeCSA has been awarded Presidential ‘Baobab’ honours for his immense contribution and achievement in the aviation industry. We would like to congratulate and thank him for his contribution to South African aviation.

Department of Environmental Affairs control of Airspace over National parks

Recently the AeCSA attended meetings in Cape Town, George and Port Elizabeth. The data requests have been solicited regarding economic impacts. It is interesting to note that presently most scheduled airlines are flying illegally when over flying some of the areas according to their approach and departure procedures. This has brought the real impact of insurance into the spot light. The Department of Transport (DOT) and Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) are meeting to understand the severity of this matter. This was due to an impact assessment by Air traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) and the feedback from the meetings held. It seems that since 2004 we are now seeing momentum.

Aviation Humour

What's the purpose of the propeller?
To keep the pilot cool. If you don’t think so, just stop it and watch him sweat!

This guy was an excellent pilot, but not really good at making passengers feel at ease.
For example, one time the airplane in front of him blew a tyre on landing, scattering chunks of rubber all over the runway. He was asked to hold while the trucks came out to clean up.
His announcement: Ladies and gentlemen, I’m afraid there will be a short delay before our arrival. They have closed the airport while they clean up what is left of the last airplane that landed there.
