Is this normally when you go solo in SA, after 20 hours ?
It depends on how fast you learn,and how often you fly.Some older pilots only go solo near 40 hours...

Hi Smallfly;

why? At what point do you go solo in NZ?

Just curious? Is the training different there?

@ Linda

Pretty much the same over here, once your instructor is happy with your progress, you go solo.

I now have 9 hours on my log, and my instructor said he just needs to show me some procedure in my next lesson and then I will b e ready for solo.

The reason for my curiosity about the hours is, when I was still in SA, a mate of mine also went solo after 20 hours in a trike, thaught there was a rule about that.

I was also quite "concerned" with the hours taken to go solo when I did my training. I went solo at 14 hrs, but I've realised that it is not a fixed figure and there is no real "average". It is affected by a multitude of things...how often you are flying...your ability to retain information...YOUR ATTITUDE...etc.

I am not an instructor, but I have great respect for these guys and girls. At the moment that your instructor thinks that you are ready he makes a very important decision. He needs to know without doubt that you can take off and land the aircraft in the current conditions based on what skills you have developed safely. It's as simple as that. Some people get to that point in 5 hours...others in 40....it has nothing to do with "talent" but a hell of a lot to do with confidence and competency, and most instructors are good judges of both. Baie geluk ANT. (^^) (^^)

Heng julle manne, ek raak ernstig jaloers as ek so lees van al die SOLO’S.
