Anyone recently done their renewal?

I did my initial medical a year ago and because I am over the big 40 I am required to do a renewal every year.

What does the renewal entail. X-rays, blood work, ECG, ears, eyes?

What does it usually cost?

As far as I'm concerned there is no difference between a Class 4 or a Class 1 medical. On paper yes but in practice no.
I always used to do my medicals at Centurion with a Doctor who mainly did aviation orientated candidates and it was always a pleasure but as soon as you go to a GP who does the occassional medical you are being treated as if you are about to go on a space mission. For my last medical I had to submit a Cardiologist report, IAM wanted a 24 hr Holter Monitor and a 24 hr Ambulatory Blood Pressure test even though I have never had a blood pressure problem. The cardiologist failed to see the reason for all of this and that was that. Then I fell slightly short in the lung function test because you have to achieve a computer generated level which is the same for a 20 year old as for a 80 year old. So it was off to a specialist physician who felt the whole thing was a bit overboard but to cover all the bases it was off to a ENT specialist who said the problem wasn't worth worrying about.
So you would need a blood test,piss in the bottle, eye test, hearing,lung function, physical,ECG.
The ECG is the one that is contradictory since level 4 rules require a resting ECG but it seems that IAM demand a full stress EGC regardless of what the rules are. When it suits them they apply the rules if it doesn't they ignore them.
It seems the problem with medicals is the same as with flying an Airbus, Boeing etc since it is mostly automated and it is the same medically in that a computer reading is all important and the Doctor doesn't seem to be allowed to express his opinion even though he is right on the spot to override the computer reading by using his training and experience.
The cost comes to R800 but that seems to be variable.

You asked and you got told, the only thing that HansH ommitted was the manditory prostrate check when you are over 40, wait for the clack of the latex glove and KY jelly . Hope it all goes well.

Class 4 medical as below

Less than 40 years old: 60 months Class 4
More than 40 years old: 36 months Class 4

Initially on reaching 40 stress ECG thereafter every three years

If I recall the doc told me between class 2 and 1 no difference but class 1, 2, compared to class 4 there are differences, examination pretty much feels the same but more relaxed criteria

For Class 4 it looks like your GP can do the medical. Perhaps the MISASA people have more gen on that.

Ask CAA this regarding to the CARS Part 67.
They say NO.
Must be done by a doctor who is accredit with CAA. Local GP can not perform this
