Koala Super Special

Postby Nevermind ZA » Thu Jun 09, 2011 9:23 pm

Hi,

I am trying to figure out the difference between the Super Koala and the Koala Super Special. I noted that it even has different CAA codes i.e SK is Z050 and KSS is Z051.

I own a registered SPORT AVIATION PRODUCTS KOALA SUPER SPECIAL and I am trying to get as much info as possible.

I will appreciate any assistance or info.

Regards

Jacques

The Koala comes in 4 flavours... vhpy

Super Koala was designed as a taildragger

Koala Gazelle was designed in a nosewheel configuration

Koala Super Special is in essence a taildragger but was designed to also take a nosewheel by simple means of turning the main gear around to face backwards and bolt on the nosewheel. The flat section of floorboard of the fuselage under the cabin is slightly longer (from firewall to back of seats) in order for the main gear to be turned around. If you turn the main gear around on a SK then you have to add a fillet of wood to the underside of the fuselage in order to fix the bolts of the main gear to the aft section of the fuselage. The KSS is already longer, no fillet required.

Then there is a JP Cruiser (JP = Johan Pienaar) who designed a Koala Gazelle (nosewheel jobbie) to look like a Cessna 150. The difference is that it has a rear window behind the seats and the rear fuselage then obviously first goes "down" from the back of the cabin roof before it goes "up" to the horisontal stab and rudder. Go find a pic of a 150 and you'll see what I mean. vhpy

What is the registration number of your KSS...?

Hi,

thanks for the reply. Mine is ZU-AWM. Airframe is zero hours and has a 582 installed. I am busy with the weight and balance and I noticed that the aircraft seems longer and has a longer wing cord than mentioned in Fisher's flight manual. It also hasn't flaps.

I want to find out if we had a locally produced version that were much different, as I need the correct data for weight and balance.

Attached is a photo of her currently...

Not supposed to have flaps...........maybe someone "modified" theirs to have flaps but none were built locally with flaps.
I notice the little window behind the doors are not half-round like all the locally made ones.
I wasn't aware that the fuselage was longer. Perhaps because of the undercarriage interchangeability like I mentioned. How much longer...about 75mm? That will also take care of the wing chord then.

The kit was bought at Ted Phelps in 1996. It was build as a tricycle with a Continental engine but never flown. It was sold to Kevin Hopper who rebuild it as a tail dragger and repainted it completely white. As far as the history goes it was then sold without an engine in 2006 and yet again never flown.

I bought it fitted with a 582, did some serious work on the aircraft and now I want to fly her. Problem is that the Fisher manual has lots of errors. I will give you an indication of their specs vs my measurements:

Wing cord: 42" (manual), 54" (AWM)
Distance between main wheels and tail wheel: 124" (manual), 173" (AWM)

That manual is seriously wrong. There's no way the difference in length between the 2 can be 49". That's 4 foot 1 inch
Even if the undercarriage was turned around to look forward in order to make it a taillie, it should only be around 300mm.

While I wait until tomorrow to speak to Duck, are there any "Microlighters" that can share their Koala Weight and Balance figures with me as well as wing cord lenght, etc?

Any flight manuals you want to share?

Thanks.
