Anyone know where I can try on a Sonex for Size?

Postby RV4ker (RIP) » Fri Apr 29, 2011 2:28 pm

After 11 years (4 kids and 2 moves) next month I finally finish my "builders" workshop/garage (10mx10m). The KR which was to be built in it has long since flown, the Animal is finished, (not by me although I did build some ribs and fit it to a wing) so now I am considering RV7, RV9 (snail build due to budget) or a Wavex (always wanted a Vtail )... It is purely for the joy of building. kids are nearing 10 and showing interest. I recon I have maybe 5 years before they trade me in for chicks and bikes/cars, so we have a 5 year time frame. the plane has no real mission other than to amuse me and 3 sons (and keep us out the house).... I don;t want anything with a RATTEX engine, so Sling RV12 etc are out.... Ali is 1st prise, since it will stand outside once finished unless I get coves hangar crap sorted out by then...

I have flown all the RV's, but the kit alone is price of complete Sonex, so as a first builder I am favoring Sonex (Wavex). I sat in a Zim reg'd one at Potch EAA in early 2000's and other than remembering it being butt ugly i don;t remeber much else. Never got to fly it at the time. I would thus very much like to test drive one if possible and am willing to fly to you and cover fuel costs if you got one? Anyone know of one flying in Southern Africa somehere. pref a tailwheel. Sonex site mentions Eastern Cape having 2 and possibly Bfn another? Any idea's?

Thanks

PS
Needs to be side by side and be able to stand outside and use a direct drive engine. other than that I am open to suggestions. Easy kit to build etc... Comments welcome....

Anyone know if Larry in Gtown still owns the Wavex he built and got contact details? Always lusted after a V tail (^^) (^^) (^^)

Hi RV4ker

Pretty sure I saw one in a hangar at Brakpan just earlier this week. Will be out that way again on Sun and Mon this long weekend so will see what I can find out for you.

Cheers

George... when you are in Bloem (Tempe) again give Martin Deysel a shout (the hangar in the corner with the nice workshop & even nicer RV-10 and other aeries in it) Not sure if if Jack O is also doing one?

He is doing the Sonex and not the Waiex....

The Onex has folding wings - especially for those cramped up hangars!

Larry & Sharon are currently on a Trans-Africa/Europe motorcycle tour and not in Grahamstown, but he still owns the Waiex. They have just got to Austria.

Their son, Ralph is an instructor at 43 Air School, and flys it occasionally to keep it oiled while Larry is away. It is possible that some flying could be arranged through him. Larry is in touch through Blackberry, and so could give permission. I will PM you Ralph's number when I have got it - seems to have disappeared off my phone.

Being ugly is an understatement George... but as a tool to commute cheaply - I am interested - especially with a Jab 3300 upfront - I know the chap building Martin's aeroplane and am sure I'll be able to get build assistance from that angle!

170mph cruise with 1200-2000 fpm climb - wow!

Seeing that the banks don't like me (and so many others ) This seems to be a much better bang for buck aircraft (@ $33 000 completed) seems to defeat the D6's object of presenting affordable flying!

Would go for the tri-cycle gear Sonex (personally)

I would really like to build one, but with the silly prices in USA it is really hard.
2002 SONEX TW WITH 3300 JAB • $32,000 • PRICED TO SELL • Original builder/owner. TTSN 380hrs. Rotec TBI fuel injector. Single center stick, Sensenich prop. Strobes. Cabin heat. Tracy O’Brien disc brakes. Grand Rapids EIS. Softcom intercom. Garmin GTX320 transponder. Microair radio. Hangared since new. Oil analysis records.. Excellent performing aircraft flies hands-off. Extensive time spent on quieting the cabin. The panel is has some very minor changes from the pictured configuration. There is some very minor documented damage early on(gear leg & prop). Many pictures available. Delivery possible.
