AOPA Air Safety Foundation reports engine failures still account for nearly 22 percent of all general aviation accidents. Approximately half of these are related to non-mechanical problems such as fuel starvation and carburetor icing, and are therefore, easily preventable.
Important statistic from the Journal of American Medical Association: only 5.2 percent of forced landings resulted in a pilot fatality. That’s a low number. In 69 percent of the crashes, there were no injuries at all!

"engine failures still account for nearly 22 percent of all general aviation accidents"

Friend of mine says that's why he prefers gliders... At least you KNOW you'll have the 'engine out' on the ground!
