Radio License?

Postby Bundy » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:59 pm

Hi Guys,

Have just finished my training and qualified as an NPL Pilot with a WCM rating.

I was told that they do not issue you a seperate Radio Licence anymore and that this is now attached to your Pilots licence.
What happens when I want to buy a radio? In the old days they asked for a copy of the Radio Licence... do I just give them a copy of my licence now?

First I heard of it too.
A radio license is just that. A license for a radio transmitter. it is attached to your plane, not your pilot's license (otherwise, how do pilots who hire and fly get their pilots licenses if the plane or radio they fly doesn't belong to them?)
The only thing you need for your pilot's license is proof you wrote and passed the radio exam in order to obtain your pilot's license.
The ICASA radio license application is very clear in that it requires the aircraft registration for which it belongs, as well as the serial number and model of the radio transmitter. This goes for handhelds as well. It is in no way attached to your pilot's license, other than you have to also provide proof that you passed the radio exam, as well as proof of payment for the license fee. Anything other than that is news to me (**)

There is possibly some confusion here between a Radio Station License and a Radio Operators Certificate...

Restricted radio license is issued to the pilot once and Radio station license is issued annually to the station which has the license (ie the plane)?

Thanks for the reply RV, ..... Sorry we are boring you Grumpy

I currently do not own my own plane, so this is the reason why Im asking this question. I have passed my radio exam as required during my training but have never recieved any Certificate of Proficiency. All it says in my Licence book is:

Radiotelephony Priveledges: The Holder of this licence has demonstrated competence to operate RT equipment on board an aircraft.
RT Licence No: (nothing)
RT Licence Type: (nothing)

I would like to buy myself a handheld radio, but I think I will have to apply for a licence in order to do it? Or are you saying that I cannot own a handheld radio without owning an Aircraft?

You should get a license with your MPL/NPL.

There is some confusion regarding the RSL for handhelds. Julian Swift was arrested for having one without license at Ollie Tambo. See thread on Avcom. I have 2 handhelds and 2 base stations which are not "licensed"? I have tried and ICASA say Hu? So I just VVKN.....

Right, sorted.

Have been in contact with Willem at Raasa.

During your training, you are required to pass a RT Proficiency Exam. On passing this, the training organisation will submit a Proficiency Certificate with your Pilots licence Application to Raasa for the issue of your licence. In your Licence book it is stated that you have the required proficiency.

In order to purchase a Hand held radio, you need to apply to ICASA for a base station licence. They will require you to submit proof of the above proficiency in order to issue you with a Restricted Radio Licence. And of course you will have to pay them for this.. haha.

You were right on the money RV! Thanks for your help. (^^)

I walked in to a pilot shop on two occasions bought a handheld and no questions regarding "Radio License" ##

I even bought a scanner at the Swartkops air show no questions asked ##

Bundy just go in tell the oak you are a microlight pilot and that you are buying a handheld for your trike and they will have no problem ## ##
