Flying into Namibia

Postby Bugwar » Mon Jan 17, 2011 1:24 pm

If I want to cross the border by Microlight somewhere close to the Rietfontein / Klein Menasse borderpost where do I need to clear customs? Keeping in mind that the two Airports need to be within 120 miles from each other. Rietfontein and Keetmanshoop?

The easiest will be to clear at Alexander Bay and Oranjemund but it adds quite a bit to the total trip distance.

Land close to the border and taxi through?

Any info will be much appreciated

Paul

If you don't mind sharing your experiences after the trip it could also be of interest and use to the rest of us!

Btw, I like your idea of taxiing across...

Thanks for the heads up Graham.
Sent Helga a PM and hope she can share some of her experiences.
Sure there's a lot of us that would be able to learn from her (incredible) experience!

So far it seems as if Keetmanshoop, Oranjemund or Luderitz are the only places you are allowed to touch down for the first time in Namibia. Many people have done it differently but it is not within the limits of the law.

I am quite happy complying with said law but would like to know from pilots who have done it what legal solutions they had.

So far the options are as follows:

Alexander Bay to Oranjemund is 6nm and no problem flying. Problem is it is a huge detour to get to where I am going. Apparently you can not clear customs at Alexander Bay. How did the "Flying the fish" guys then do it?

Uppington to Keetmanshoop is 203nm and thus out of reach for most trikes.

Rietfontein is 105nm from Keetmanshoop and there is a border post and airfield at Rietfontein. The question is:" Can I land at Rietontein and clear customs and immigration there before going to Keetmanshoop?

Where are the law experts?

If I fly from Uppington to Keetmanshoop, am I allowed to make a "technical stop" for fuel? If so can it be at any airfield?

Shortest route from Uppingtom to Keetmanshoop is 200nm. Out of reach for a my trike in one go.

Hi Paul,
When I applied for the authority to fly Nmibia I requested permission to cross the border at Ariamsvlei. It does mean a bit of a walk to the border post but sometimes the police come and collect you. In Upington you can also contact Eben Mocke who can also advise you on the Custom clearance. He runs the school at Upington Airport. I believe that Rietfontein Border post is closed. Hope you come right. If there is anything else let me knoiw and I will try to help.
Regards

Hi Helga / Paul

Eben Mocke jr is known as SARAF on this forum, his Father Eben used to arrange the Kalahari Bundu Bash in the past, they are always very helpfull.

Rietfontein Border post is still fully operational from 08:00 to 16:30 every day, the border post that was closed a few years ago is Noenieput / Hohlweg, which is in between Nakop and Rietfontein.
