I'm New in this game, and very curious.

Okay so i'm a women and Ya guys I'm blond aswell. But know i need someone to answer this question for me PLEASE!!!

When are flipping with a microlight legal or illegal.

Why am I asking.....?

Went away for the long weekend (24 Spet) and spotted a guy doing flips with a trike. When I approached him, he didnt really introduce himself just said that each flip are 15 minutes long and R300.

Now what I want to know is:

Can anybody do flips or do you need to be an instructor and do you need to have legal papers stating who you are and for which school you are working for?

Hello Foxy

We can only answer your question once you have posted a pic of yourself :)

legally, only a flight school is entitled to charge for flips.

Any pilot may take people for flips but not for reward.

Hi Foxy

As far as i can remember you need to be an Instructor but i can be wrong.
But you definately need something more than just a normal License to Charge or recieve any sort of Remuniration for the Flipping.

In order to take passengers for flipping you must be qualified as a instructor or have commercial rating on your licence. The commercial rating has a similar requirement to the instructor in hours experience, type and frequency of medical and the aircraft must be maintained by an AMO.

96.01.1(8) For the purpose of sub-regulation (3), flipping is defined as the carrying
of fare-paying passengers for the purpose of sight-seeing, and such operations
shall be restricted as follows:
(a) flights shall commence and end at the same aerodrome or helicopter
landing site without any intermediate landing, and without any disembarking
taking place by any means while the aircraft is in flight (parachute,
rappelling, etc.);
(b) the duration of flights shall not exceed one hour of flight time;
(c) the number of passengers carried, whether fare-paying or carried for
free, shall not exceed nine.

I don't think the commercial NPL licences are available yet

However you as a pilot may take anyone for a flight, provided that they are correctly briefed, understand the risks, and you don't do so for gain. Remember it's you who takes the risk here wrt claims should there be an incident or accident. The commercial operations are covered by the school/business insurances.

Gee foxyloxy ...............where were you for the long weekend where you noticed this naughty boy?
For someone who is 'new in the game' you seem to know a lot about... 'if you need to be an instructor'.. with ...'legal papers' .... 'and which school you are working for' ..... (**) .

I often take friends for a flip (for no remuneration) and I have also had to quote excessively for a short trip to people I don't know, as this discourages them from harassing me and being a nuisance to be taken for a ride..

We had one of the CAA inspectors in our area a few weeks back. He indicated that a handfull of Part 96 Authorisations had been issued. It is also not just about the Part 96 autho however, as you still need to operate under an organisation that has an air services licence etc just like a charter operation.

I must say Foxyloxy

you do seem to know a lot more than you profess?

Some of your other posts have also used a specific language and spelling that reminds me of someone on this forum long ago :roll:

Perhaps your 1300hour Instructor (boy?)friend should answer this question. Where is he training now?

I was not there, I can't say whether or not he was indeed flipping. I have stated what the regulations say.
