carb question

Hi guys

Has anyone noticed that the bing 54 carb’s idling jets have obvious grooves in to allow for a o ring to fit there. Plus when I went to my local BMW motorcycle dealer and showed him the carb, he immediately said there should be a o-ring as his parts list for similar bing carb shows it like that.

Is there a good reason for not installing it? I would recon u could have a better seal beween the carb bowl and intake side by fitting them.

Any comments?

Aviation engines confirmed that there must be one... I must parts sketches I have seen it does not show the o-ring.

This was a modification after they find that the clip holding the needle can came of during flight and cause an engine out. Remember reading this somewhere sometime ago.

Found it. See here: http://www.ultralightnews.ca/bing/needleclipupdate.html

This update prevents wear on the needle and clip. The update requires the purchase of part #831-715 a rubber 0 ring which fits on to the top of the needle, and the installation of a NEW style retaining cup part # 827-347. The new retaining cup has a cut out for the rubber O ring which puts pressure down on the clip and needle to prevent them from turning and wearing.

The question is not about the needle o-ring, but rather the lack of an o-ring on the idle jet.

Thanks Morph! Strange that they told me to put it in. I did and boy o boy does that motor sound sweet. Idles like a 4 stroke, got power of a turbine :-)
