Circus to Phalaborwa

Postby Porra » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:13 pm

 Hey guys!! I have eventually got the umph to do a trip i always wanted to do! The softness is NOT impressed with me  cause she dont want me to fly it alone. ya ya ya. Well, anyway, i have planned like such:
Leave Circus around 05:45 (or as soon as there is light) and rute to Middelburg FAMB. Re-fuel and strech legs and then of to a privat strip called Hannah Game Lodge.( spoke to Wayne, very helpfull and excited to here i want to stop there for a leg strech). Re-fuel if needed and off to Phalaborwa.(have the permit already.)
Heres the thing! I will be doing this trip in a Windlass 503. Would any of you who have done this before advise otherwise?
Plan to do it from the 1st April to the 6th April. Anyone else want to join in? I will be staying at a B&B in Phalaborwa called La La Mo. (015) 781 0995 speak to Olga!(nice little Porra place) (^^)
p.s Anyone know if there is hangar space available for a couple of days? if not at the airport, in the surrounding area.
Porra.

I feel that there's safety in numbers and be very careful in the escarpment, fly high. Fantastic flying areas and scenery en route. Enjoy it!! Get hold of Deon Kraidy in Hoedspruit - www.lefssa.com he'll be able to give some ideas on hangarage in that area.
Be sure to fly to Numbi for a great breakfast and then up to God's Window, all the waterfalls and the canyon.

Please check re-fueling in Middelburg, unless you are carrying your own extra fuel.
We did a trip to Numbi last year and had to specially organise for fuel to be brought to the airfield.

You can contact JFK here on microlighters for more info.

Hippo Pools is close to Palaborwa and would be nice to visit. Nice meals. Tar runway.
You must go and fly the Blyderiver Canyon - Gods Window area.
Enjoy and try and find friends to join rather than go it alone.

I have almost inlaws (will be by 30 Oct) in Phalaborwa and fly there often. Be sure of the WX conditions and wind as that mountain can be a tricky one, keep the alt if the wind is blowing! Get someone on the otherside to update you on the WX. Cleared the escarpment once only to find cloudcover all the way to Phalaborwa! Strips like hippo pools can be tricky if the wind is blowing from the wrong side (ask the locals) but otherwise fantastic flying down there. Almost every farm has a landing strip an dthe people are generally quite friendly! Enjoy

Circus to Phalaborwa

Postby Frootbat » Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:27 pm

Hallo All,

Do not forget the guys @ Lydenburg, they are very friendly & helpful.

From Lydenberg, Longtom Pass, Sabie, Mac-Mac falls, Graskop, Gods Window then into the valley to
Lisbon falls, Berlin falls, Bourke's luck potholes, Blydepoort dam, Swadinie and then into the Lowveld.
Remember when u are exiting the escarpment, u must talk to Hoedspruit Military ATC,
otherwise they will invite u for tea (he-he).
No, they are very friendly & the will even invite u to fly over the base (no joke), en route to Palagat.
Willie van der Walt, the person mentioned in the postings above, can provide u with the details of who to call when.

Magic trip..........

Regards,
Hannes.

(^^) Splinter! This will be great!! If you come along, we could really have a great time. It is always better to fly with someone than to fly alone!! this will be a long week-end anyway. Who else will be interested? (^^)
