Does anyone know if a licence is required to fly a microlight in Zimbabwe? I have been told that you don't need a licence to fly there. This seems strange but anything can happen in an African country.

Yes you do need an MPL(microlight) licence to fly in Zimbabwe. We are still self regulated and very strick about licencing and also annual airie inspections/ permit to fly, you can only get a license if you are a member of an offical flying club. You are also required to obtain an RT licence which can be arranged thru the club, this includes cabbage patch fliers.
As far as I am aware visitors fly on there valid home country licence.
Note all flights leaving the cabbage patch need a flight plan submitted ,24hrs notice of intention to fly to X ,and a valid reference number aquired.
Hope this gives you a general idea whats needed to stay legal.
Our air force is very pro active and will send a squadron of pigeons after you should you transgress the regulations.
