Hi EAAers,

Just a reminder about the SA Aviation Museum Society’s very special event this Wednesday 9 December 2009.
We will appreciate as much publicity for this cause as we can get please.

PURPOSE:

As you may know, the aviation museum does not receive any funds from the government or an airline.
It is run entirely by volunteer workers with a passion for preserving our aviation history.

We were donated some of South Africa’s very old passenger aircraft, but do not have the funds to get them to the museum.
These aircraft are now under threat of being broken up and sold as scrap aluminium.
They include:

• 1946 Vickers Viking. (that stood on the roof of the garage south of Johannesburg)
• 1949 Constellation.
• 1960 Boeing 707.

THE EVENT:

Visitors to the Aviation museum are in for a special treat this coming Wednesday evening.
The grand old lady, B747 Lebombo, will be powered up and open for visitors in all her glory!
Under the wings below, an evening Christmas Market for shoppers will take place.

Experience the ambiance created by the dimmed cabin lights, reading lights on, soft boarding music playing in the background,
and ex SAA Air Hostesses making fun announcements, as tour guides show you the sights usually never seen as a passenger.

GUIDED TOURS:

Tour guides will share interesting facts and stats with you such as:

• This 747 cost R17,5 mil, but almost twice as much was spent on tyres alone.
• She spent 12 ½ years of her life airborne during her 32 years of service for SAA.
• She covered more than 90 million kilometres and used 962 million kilograms of fuel in the process.
• More than 6 million passengers travelled on her.
• She made 20,300 landings and in the process used 3,384 tyres.
• Her wingspan is 60 metres and she carries a whopping 200,000 litres of fuel, weighing 160 tons!
• The maximum take-off weight is 375,000 kg.
• She could fly a distance of 12,700 kilometres at a cruising speed of 850 km/h
• Etc etc

CHRISTMAS MARKET:

Below the many aircraft parked on the museum grounds, will be a Christmas Market where people will be displaying
their products/services/produce. Afterwards do a tour of the museum hall with it’s many interesting displays,
including articles from the ocean bed after the crash of the Helderberg B747.
