****Pricing discussion - Touchy subject****

Postby Stephan van Tonder » Fri Jul 31, 2009 1:30 pm

Just been to comet aviation supplies and everytime I walk out of there I feel like I had been raped. R610 for a thermostat for a 618 and R420 for a radiator cap. Friggen daylight robbery. I wonder how those guys sleep at night... :(

Stephan

I think I know that the answer to my question is that these guys have the sole agency for Rotax engines. But here is the question anyway: Where do the jetski owners buy their spare parts? Is there a jetski service centre that may just have a different set of rip-off structures?

Stephan,

I thought so, that's why I asked the question. So you have three choices, either buy from them, import from overseas or get another agency going in SA for these parts. Do you think they are overcharging or do you know? :?

Whirly - I have a very strong idea were are bieng overcharged but I think it could simply be a form of price fixing from Rotax all over.
Rod - I tried the Karting suppliers and they were just as expensive. The jet-skis use an open water cooling system and not a radiator so the 2 items I needed does not seem to appear on a jet ski. The radiator cap is also such a unique fit that I could not find any other make of cap that even comes close and I tried bikes, boats etc and drew a blank everywhere. No they have the monopoly and they know it. What really pees me off when I asked them why so expensive the answer - 'oh you can't get just anybody to make thermostats and caps - it's for aviation and they are scared of the liability - certified parts you know' I almost swallowed my tonque - since when is Roatx certified for avaiation - they ahve the world's biggest disclaimer in the bakc of tha manual saying the aren't - damn double standard right there. I wish somebody else will enter the market with similar engines and knock them off their migthy perch. It's ot that there aren't other manufaturers that can't do it..

As I said - would've cost you less to take the radiator to Silverton and have a toyota filler neck TIG'd on.....

Way to go Miskiet or rather Stephan.

If you change your after market thermostat every year I am sure you will have the same reliability as the "certified" Rotax part.

Stephan and while you are at it, why dont you write a new maintenance manual for the engine and get it accepted by CAA, then you can do pretty much as you please. (You can call the engine the T-Rex) vhpy vhpy vhpy

Kind regards,

Gunter Rostek.

My Bushbaby, 912 has a little Silverton radiator (R550) and a little Silverton oil cooler (R700) and it flies damn lekker.

R4500 for a radiator and R2200 for a oil cooler, hmmm, now let me think about this for a bit.
