Microlighters

Hi all,
I was just wondering what classification do we in sa use for microlight class. Is it the same as caa new zealand? As i have noticed a few jabiru aircraft being sold here, can one fly those with a mpl rather than a ppl? If some one could shed some light for me.

Hi. The Jabiru's classified under the LSA Class and not MPL. So do the Bush Baby, Cheetah, JK05 ,CTSW , Jora and a view other. Rather tell us what you want to fly and we can assist in finding out what license you will need..............

Well, i'd like to eventually get a jabiru spt 2200, but was thinkin first run on the ladder would be a microlight... Money wise.

Somewhere on CAA website it lists the requirements? Cant find it now. maybe search on here and avcom. Think the relevant section was quoted some time back. Basically 260kg empty. 450kg mauw. 2 seats and there are limits on the speeds. Most 582 and 503's (maybe 2200) should be possible to get micro class. 912 and 3300 Jabs are a bit more difficult mainly due to 260kg empty weight...

Thanks, yeah i've only been able to find caa new zealand specs which say 2 place craft needs to be 544kg gross or less, and have a stall speed in landing config (flaps and such) or 45 knots or less. But i'll keep looking for sa relevant classifications for microlights.

In the past there was only MPL and PPL

Then they changed it all to a National Pilots Licence with different weight ratings and training requirements

Most light aircraft manufacturers snuck their aircraft in by installing light engines and minimal equipment to keep the empty weight under 260kg and the MAUW not exceeding 450kg allowing MPL to fly them

But it became increasingly difficult to keep the modern designed machines with 4 stroke motors within the minimum empty weight therefor the Light Sport Class was introduced. Here your aircraft may be more than 260kg, in fact I don't think there is a min weight requirement, but the max weight cannot exceed 600kg

so in sub 260kg empty and MAUW 450kg and flown on a CCM (convensional controlled Microlight licence- the old MPL)

Thunderbirds with 2 strokes
Cheetahs with 2-stroke motors etc
all the old slow legacy microights like Skyfox, Basic4000, Quicksilver
Beaver 550

Light Sport
all 4 stroke powered (Rotax and Jabiru engines)
Bushbaby
Jabiru 2 seaters
Cheetahs
Most modern composites like Jora, CT, Foxbats
Ravin
Zenair 701 and 601
etc

Then PPL for heavier/multi seat planes (more than 2)

Schedule 1: Microlight minimum speed
Any aeroplane qualifies as a microlight when its maximum gross mass, useful
load and minimum speed complies with the requirements as stated below.
1. A one or two seat aeroplane whose minimum speed at gross mass is less than
65 km/h (or 35.1 knots or 40.39 mph) and having a maximum gross mass of:
– 300 kg for a landplane, single-seater
– 350 kg for an amphibian, or a pure seaplane, single-seater
– 450 kg for a landplane, two-seater
– 500 kg for an amphibian or a pure seaplane, two-seater.
2. The minimum speed will be calculated by taking into account the wing area,
the possible presence of high-lift devices and the gross weight, according to
the provisions of paragraph 6.
3. The aeroplane may also qualify as a microlight by a flight demonstration of
minimum level speed at gross weight (in this case, it must fly over a 500 m
course). The measured speed will be the average of the timed speed in both
directions. The component of the wind perpendicular to the course must not
exceed 10 km/h. The measured speed will be corrected for air density (15 C,
1013.2 mb, Om).
4. The useful weight to be considered must be at least equal to 90 kg per seat and
– a full charge of fuel or 15 kg, whichever is less, for a single-seater, or
– a full charge of fuel or 22 kg, whichever is less, for a two-seater.
The useful weight as defined in the present paragraph will be called “nominal
FAI useful weight”.

Please also help? If one wants to do a license for flying a trike, is that now a new special license or can it be flown under PPL, NPL, MPL also?

Hi Deon.

You are going to fly it under NPL or if you fly it on a current CAA MPL you will renew it on the RAASA NPL.

Ek het nou net n splinternuwe NPL in SA gekry wat onder "Pilot Revalidation Dates" Valid Until lees: WCM 22/7/2009 en LSA 16/04/2011, maw my MPL of WCM het nou verval, meen dit dat ek trikes kan vlieg onder my NPL of moet ek WCM eers hernu, ek het nog ook n valid MPL in die UAE waarmee ek hier vlieg
