Microlighters

I am planning to buy a Quad to tow the plane around. Clever oukes. What do I need to know. Do not want to spend a fortune, but need a quad that can tow a 1.5 ton aerie up a 1:9 slope. Can I go cheap and nasty or am I wasting cash? Any idea where I can get second hand small tractor?

I think you will get one of these small Kibuto tractors for cheaper than a quad. or Phillemon for that matter

Fiellie is now unionised and does not work before 8am or after 4.30pm. He has also africanised 3 hand pums at a cost of R2000 a pop. I am bang to let him try dent the wing again.....

i can do it, but the older folks are batteling to move the plane around when it full of fuel and as a result are flying less and less. Rather than sell plane make flying easier.... Fiellie she is not an option unfortunately....

I will not recommend this quad as a tug, their clutches have a tendancy to burn very easy, as it is a dry clutch, and their power to weight ratio is not very good, to give you an idea it weighs about 100kg more than the equivalent Suzuki for the same engine capacity, and even in low range it is not very strong. I do have both and can talk from own experience. The Rustler is very Robust but a typical made in China. It is relative cheap comparing to other brands but you get what you pay for.

But anyway - I just chucked some ideas at him. There are lots of others of course and all on that site - like polaris etc. at like 4 times the price.

The automatic CVT is a belt and Pulley system that replace the gearbox, it still use a centrifigal clutch that start connecting as soon as the engine revs increase from idle.

The low range on the Rustler make a difference but my 250cc Suzuki without low range give me the same or better climb than the 260cc Rustler in low range because the Rustler is overweight. I think you looked at the 300cc but you must have a good imagination to feel a difference in performance between the 260 and the 300. I know that Linhai recntly launched a V2 520cc which might be a better option for you, not sure about the price.

I like the Honda, and at least it is having a semi automatic gearbox with real gears and not belts and pulleys and will outlast any Rustler. In my opinion in the 200 - 300cc class the Honda and Suzuki are the best value for money for your purpose.

Wasn't for me and I'm certainly no quad expert. Just knew where to find some specs. But I'm sure the original poster now has a better idea of what to look out for. Some centrifugal systems doesn't actually use a clutch plate to connect but I'm sure you speak from experience as you said. I know that you can't even buy a fairly old tractor for the price these quads go for so perhaps there is something that might be suitable for him.

I am also no expert but at least if I can not fool you with facts I will try to baffle you with bullsh..!

The advantage of a quad above a tractor is that you can use you the quad to play with too but not the tractor!

I had the same question not so long ago, they are to light and tend to spin, even if they had the torque. The solution, a towbar in front of your car, you can see good , have enough weight, torque, stopping power, control, at a fraction of the cost, maybe R 2000 max.and you have i less machine to do maintenance on. Alternatively a winch in the back of your hangar that you hook onto the landingear and press a knob. I went for the towbar, 4 hrs in JHB an custom made R 1900.00

WRT quads spinning up. I was witness to a can am Outlander pulling a Hilux out of the mud. The right machine will have no problem with power or traction. But then i am sure you are not after a R100k solution. A 400 Outlander would do fine and you should find one 2nd hand for under R40k
