Flying Morningstar to Bloem
Doing a bit of flight planning to ferry my J400 to Newcastle.
Is there any place on route that we will be able to fill up the Avgas.
I'm planning the route from morning star to Sutherland, then De Aar and then to Bloem where we can again refuel. From there We might drop in at Harrismith before flying to Newcastle.
Any contacts and phone no's will be appreciated

Bennie,
Are you in the Fairest Cape at the moment? It would be nice to meet you, if you are.

Hi Bennie,
Your best call for avgas is karoo Gateway at beaufort wes. Nice runway. You can even stay over for the night if you so wish.
Here is the link on avcom for all contact numbers etc. I don't know of any other places that might have avgas. Sutherland don't, and Victoria don't have as well.

Dirk
Sutherland does have fuel, if you know the right people, like inspector Malan.
The SAPS kindly brought us fuel out to the runway on the 20th of April... how about that!?
Who said they were out to get us? We found them most helpful and accommodating.
Bennie, if you need to refuel at Sutherland, I have numbers.

Re: Flying Morningstar to Bloem
Hi Len
It will be grate if we could refuel at Sutherland but will AVGAS be available ?
Bouford Wes is a wee bit out of the way but if all else fail we will have to top up there.
The best plan seems to be flying early on Wednesday morning to Cape Town from Durban. Once there Fairy Fly catcher and me will make our way to Morning Star to Pickup the Jabbie and do a conversion to type. Then If still enough time of daylight left we will route to Bloemfontein and from there plan to continue to Bethlehem and then Newcastle.....

No Bennie, definately no AVGAS at Sutherland.
We run on Unleaded or Avgas so unleaded was brought from the local garage.

Beaufort West (300miles) is your best bet. Carnavon is another option (310miles). This is lion's country, I would follow the N1 as much as possible. Looks like about 620 via Caranvon and 640 via Beaufort

The first part of the journey is huge klippe(8500ft), but there are safe spots to get over them (i.e.Bainskloof pass above 6500ft or north near Tulbagh) . The area north of Sutherland is barren and dry with lots of very wide open spaces.

I flew tulbagh to beaufort. Easiest. Nav is easy as well. Lots of "Big rocks". If you go into the karoo area of carnavon and victoria west, there is no real reference points to nav by. You can use the VOR's though.Morph wrote:The first part of the journey is huge klippe(8500ft), but there are safe spots to get over them (i.e.Bainskloof pass above 6500ft or north near Tulbagh) . Here some examples
The first is via Bain's Kloof. More klippe at Bains and between Worchester and Touws
The second is the one via Tulbagh. Much less rocks.
