Dropping objects from trike

As part of a fund raising campaign, the local High Schools wants me to drop flour bombs from my trike onto the school’s rugby field.

What permissions do I need to:
• Fly low level over populated area
• Dropping objects from the aircraft.

What other legal aspects do I need to take care of?

Thanks
Chris

Good luck:

And those are just the basic display requirements, never mind the additional exemptions you require (**) ...

I once did it at my kids school as part of their "Claim" thing. But this is a farm school out of a built up area. Did it from 200ft AGL with lots of farmland (and landing) around. Had a passenger doing the "bomb drops" soI could stick to flying. Important to throw hard down, and not just lobbing the "meel bomme" out ! Did a couple of test runs over the airfield before though.

Chris, I am not familiar with your situation, but if the school is in a built up area in Lydenburg ... plan well. Sh@t happens under strange circumstances.

If you do end up dealing with the powers that be at the Commission Against Aviation make sure that you get any permissions in writing. They have a tendency to pass the buck if/when the going gets tough. As far as I know you are allowed to drop flower or fine sand from an aircraft without needing permission, but doing so at a show will require paperwork equal in weight to the aircraft MAUW!!

Good Luck

There have been some ugly flying acidents regarding school shows and dropping stuff to schools e.t.c.

Go the safe option- get the Friesland and organise a moo poo raffle. vhpy

I did apply for authorisation from CAA to do 'bombings', but it was refused.

Strictly, nothing might be dropped from an aircraft.

Thanks for all your comments and contributions

Guess these guys are in die groot kaka then:
Johannesburg - A light aircraft crashed behind a school in Springs, east of Johannesburg, on Friday, Ekurhuleni police said.

Captain Julia Klaasen said two people aboard the micro aircraft were treated for shock after it crash-landed behind a high school in Sarel Cilliers Street. They were not injured.

"The pilot crash-landed the plane after one of the pamphlets they were distributing got stuck in the engine," she said.

There were also fatalities after dropping easter eggs to a nursery school.

Just in case there where any qestions still remaining with regards to this thread; I would like to bring up the accident which occured a day or two ago when a couple of young guys tried to drop pamphlets over a school from a trike. They ended up with an engine failure and a hell of a lot of explaining to do! -xX #-0

Thankfully injuries to the pilot and passenger where relatively minor.

The design of a trike with the prop at the back, does not lend itself to being a great bombing platform, especially for light objects.

Please be careful if you do drop anything from any aircraft.

Rumour, note RUMOUR, (see AVCOM) has it that the trike "had no airfilters" fit. :?:

Like most things in life there is a trick to it. In this case the trick is to say no! if asked to do it. (I have dropped Bombs for school, pamphlets for other events) Always ask yourself why you fly, I fly because i like it not to impress, not to assist. My opinion. Jannie
