I wonder how many of you guys have gone through this rigmarole? I really do think that the authorities do this on purpose hoping gun owners will give up and hand in their weapons.    I've got two rifles. I've done the tests, got the certificate but now the SAPS want a letter from a farm or ranch where i go hunting. ## ## Are there any farm owners willing to help? I need the letter by tomorrow. Pleeeeeeeeeez  e-mail me at keith@cncdesign.co.za

The friendliest, most helpful and most efficient staff here at SAPS Hillcrest if anyone in this area is looking at applying. No problems with my 303 and now trying for a .22 rifle. These guys actually advise you on why not to hand in firearms (if anyone is even thinking of that!) and I have seen a few converts now applying.

Well done to them (^^)

If you hand in a firearm it will be a lot more difficult to get a license later on.

Took me 2 days to jump through all the hoops (courses for rifle, handgun, shotgun and competency). Most gun accreditation facilities (hunting shops) should be able to help, but they are MOER busy. Good luck...

The deadline is 31 March if your birthday is late in the year (Oct - Dec me thinks?). If your birthday is earlier the deadline has long expired. The documentation I read gave me the impression that it is ok if you just hand in before 31 March 2009. NOT. I booked for the test but was out of the country a lot and did not get round to it.

I gave mine in towards the end of last year(my birthday is end sept) and had to give them a sworn affidavit as to WHY I was late. There was also an article stuck to the door of the office about you possibly ending up in court if you are late.

As all the old licenses actually only expire in JUNE and some police stations are more than 2 years behind on processing the applicationsI think you will get a slap on the wrist if you are late but be ready for an earfull ($$) from the police.

Good luck

Nothing.

Colleague also didn't want to do it, cause of the schlep. When I conviced him it's the right thing to do, he was like three months late. They are very behind and are just very happy if you do the registration.

JUST DO IT.

Im going to be honest with you ZU-NEL, getting the training, writting the exams and getting the training cert is the easy part!!! It takes Approx 4 - 5 hours to write the exams, shoot your ten rounds and get the cert at NuLaw in Kempton Park (Close to the old KCR). This can be done all in one afternoon without an appointment. Google them, they are helpfull and profesional. vhpy

Now comes the hard part......... To get a cert stating that you are competent you need to go the SAPS with loads of documents, testamonials, letters from game farm and letters saying what colour undies you have on! Depending on the line at the police station this can take a full day if you are lucky! Getting all the documents in order can also take one full working day! No kidding it is one moer of a long list!

Now that you have applied for your Lic renewal you will know in approx 4 years if it has been granted!!! Yes 4 years is the backlog for renewals! Not sure on the backlog for new apps!

Good luck and enjoy!

Handed mine in Yesterday, I was under the first group, no problem at all. The beauty of the delay in issue is that you will only need to renew 5 years after issue, so the longer it takes the better.

 Spot on !

My paperwork went in 3 years and 1 month ago !

Two months ago I had an inspection by the SAPS of my gun safe.

Other than that, no confirmation of Lic renewal yet. ##

My first renewal took 18 months for my self defense .38 sp, my renewal for sport shooting on my 9mm took 3 months - pretty impressive.

Did mine in 2006. Was one of the first group. Got my licenses this year January 2009. It took three years! I get the license but still have not receive my competency cards which apparently you are suppose to receive first. It's a joke. Got two firearms, one I get the license for 5 years the other for 10 years. Will not go through this kak again I will destroy them and hand them in.
