22 April 2009

Whot a bunch of whoozies in the Western Cape. Only one other microlight in the air. Just a bit of wind and they all pull the covers over their heads!

See whttp://www.zu-dve.com for today's log and
http://www.gpsed.com/track/499311289005751267
for the track and some pictures.

A interesting landing. See the following picture. There is an easterly, and I am approaching from north north east. My groundspeed (airspeed 55) coming from Philedelphia is 74mph (track left top corner), them as I pass Koeberg Hill, it picks up to 78 and as I get into crosswind it is 34mph. Downwind I am pointing my nose NNE and flying a perfect parallel downwind at 46mph and as expected I do a quick base (74mph) with a deliberate bulge at finals so that I can fly into the easterly. Strange place that Morningstar....see the windsock picture.

It was a magic week-end. The flying was physically and mentally comfortably challenging for this old duck. (Only Lucas had a parachute, they rest of us only had "mind over matter" flying along the river). Klein Pella and Dundi Lodge guest houses provided luxurious physical respite and glorious food. Windhoek Lager and Merlot dulled the images of the lack of safe places to crash.
Thanks to :
Gert for being a capable co-pilot and patient pax.
Dirk who came all the way from Cape Town dragging AVL along; to Karin, Ankia and Marieta for manning the back-up vehicle, wandering around the Boesmanland's roads to join us.
Thinus for being the "Sweep" trike and finding and herding the straggler in the air.
Lucas and Johan for catching up with us and joining wholeheartedly in the fun on Saturday and Sunday.
Rookie Willie, for being the butt of many jokes and providing the comic relief.
Jannie for being the "squadron leader" worrying about us all and making sure we all did the right moves in the air and on the ground.

Next trip...... maybe back Noup?

Spare a thought for one of your squadron members who was left behind !!
I now have a number of broken fingers. However I did get to fly into the Stellenbosch fly in on Saturday. Was the only proper flying machine there !!!
Having flown in the area a lot the pictures brings back fond memories of Lucas and I flying the river.
Gert is the envy of most microlighters with his escapades. Sure wish I could have joined in. Next time.
Fly safely.
Graham.

Oh no, many places to crash. Still can't make up my mind. You can pick a spot.
