I have created Springs and posted a picture for both FABA and FASI. Takes some getting use to and that is what will put people off from updating the data.

I don't know how flexible the editor is but it would be nice if the data entry could be in a template format like "Frequency" ...... and the updator just fills in the blanks. Secondly, it would make it far more acceptable if personal details are only visible to logged in users, like in Junkmail or Bidorbuy. Then all these canibal style telephone numbers, one ow ate one ow, won't be necessary. puff Also, if someone has found benefit from the site he/she will be more willing to contribute towards it. If we could bulk populate the site with data and then just ask for editing and some additions people will be more interested in updating the info....me thinks.

I think the site has great potential and somehow we must promote it....Bundy you are PR external..what do you suggest. (^^)

At this stage I suggest we keep working on the concept and gather ideas.

I like the idea behind the "wiki" type set up...but it's not very user friendly for IT deficient idiots like me...laugh all you want but believe me there are many!

Needs to be simpler, I like your suggestion of having set fields that you simply click and fill in :) ...we will need to see how much a similar website will cost to develop and run. I dont have a clue at this stage.

Will give it a bit of thought....right now...it's time for me to crank the volume up on the stereo and have an ice cold beer! Have a great weekend all. (^^)

Can I suggest adding categories to the entries, viz. "Airfields" and province, e.g. "Gauteng" like in the Ingwe/Eagle's Creek entries.

That way you can find everything in your area at the click of a button, and wouldn't require a manual airfields page.

You just need to add these to the bottom of the airfield entry:

[[Category:Airfields]]
[[Category:Gauteng]]

and the wiki does the rest for you

awesome Idea indeed, I'm new but this makes perfect sense, would have expected something like this to be available already. How can I be of assistance?? I can provide the CDs at my cost, how many are required??

Should we print onto the CDs aswell?

There is Turbo, "Airfields Directory for Southern Africa". But it is focused on General Flying airfields. These are longer than 700m, suitable for spam cans. Jan Coetzee saw the need for a Microlight airfields directory (short runways) and compiled the excelent book called "Microlight Airfields of South Africa". But it was last updated in 2004 and is not available in electronic format?. Jan has since retrired from aviation, so there is no hope of a new edition. If, with his permission, we could upload his data, as a starting point, into the microlighters wiki database we could imortilise the information and with the help of fellow aviators and MISASA, keep it up to date. Would it be possible that this 2004 information was in electronic format before it was printed? Hoping we could get hold of this and add to it.

Well I'm willing to assist, let me know what is required.

I managed to add an airfield and put in info so it can't be that hard. I suggest someone comes up with a format that we all stick to and then we need to motivate everyone to add at least 5 airfields each and we will soon have the country covered. There are incidentally 81 microlight airfields listed on the 1:250000 aeronautical chart for Gauteng area, so just putting those in would be a good start.

Great Frank, Yip like a template in text format that one could edit in notepad or MS word and just cut and paste into the Wiki edit window. I will build one and post for comments. This is going to be great..Bundy and DarkHelmit and however started...lets add some airfields to the database for everyone to benefit from and make flying safer. (^^)

Oh, and Sir Francis and lady Sharon....are you joining us for a weekend at Steve Bosch. 4th May. See Microland thread. (^^)

To keep it standard I have attached a template for comment (just change the file extension from .doc to .txt). Once you have logged into wiki with your microlighters username and password, you can then just edit the template and copy and paste it into the .. ($$) ($$) ($$) .... airfield in edit mode. Hope to see some additions to the web site.

General comments / guidelines:

- The ICAO 4 letter FA-identifier must be included but it does not mean the airfield is registered.
- Frequency is in Mhz
- Elevation is in feet.
- Co-ordinates are in deg min sec.sss
- “Ownership” options are, Private, Public, Municipal, Military,
- “Welcome” options are, All Anytime, All Advanced notice required, Advanced notice required, Emergency only, Prior permission required, Definitely prior permission required, Military base - definitely prior permission required
- Runway “Condition” options are, Unknown, Poor, Good, Excellent
- Runway surface options are, Unknown, Asphalt, Concrete, Paved, Grass, Gravel, Dirt, Sand, Snow, Ice, Water. I don’t think the last three will be used very often is RSA.

I will add FAWK next. (**)

Cheers

Guys a microlight pilot wrote the Airportiki. Where does it fall short for a micro pilot? Seems a pity to duplicate efforts - especially when the main challenge is the crowd sourcing of the information.

Oh - and an app is already in development.
