Gert/All, The first time I had to replace the tyres on my trike, I took it to a local tyre specialist (I have split rims). I wanted the strongest tyre on there, so I got the 8 inch, 8 ply trailor tyre. It has a 100PSI rating. So the guy in the shop inflated it to what the tyre said and the rim exploded into many pieces before it reached there. He was extremely luckily not to get any pieces in him.

Now I use 4 ply trailor tyres (I found out the heavy ones cause a huge wobble on take off unless they are perfectly balanced) with a much lower than rated pressure. And I do them myself now. Real hassle of a job though!

Back from the Assegaaybos fly-in. Going was uneventful. Coming back had a headwind and turbulence. Not the ideal flying weather.

See www.zu-dve.com for a google/GPS log of Zirk, Zanie and my trip with a couple of pictures. The photocollage is a bit big, 500K - so not posted on the forum...

I have now added a videoclip (small 1M and large 5M versions) of the Assegaay fly-in. Please look at the last minute of the videoclip - the camera was mounted on the controlbar, and the trike's movement reflect the turbulance we experienced. Your comments?
See..

A westerly wind, so the coastal route not the best choice - very very bumpy below 300ft but great above 2000. Took Leith (camera batteries packed up so could not include his smile in pic) before Dave on a flip. Tomorrow going to Saldanha.

I have just added a log for today to my log website, www.zu-dve.com

Image

We flew to Saldanha, 61 miles to the northwest of Wintervogel to congratulate Di Ellis on obtaining her MPL at sunrise. I had Steve and Laurie (Steve's chatty better/bitter half [and that is a measurement]) as a passenger on the way back to FAWF. We had a fabulous low level flight along the sea - the longest stretch was 11 miles sand and sea. A round trip of 2:41 and 145 miles with a max of 92.4mph.

Please have a look at my website, and let me know if you want to receive reminders from time to time when I have added something...

Gert

There is a very strange picture behind your passenger. Looks as though you have melted your trike

Returned from a great weekend at Nieuwoudtville. This has to become a yearly event - I will put more pictures on the web tomorrow, and will be writing an article, hopefully for microlight magazine. We flew in on Friday, enjoyed the kerk bazaar on Saturday, flew in a Pipistel by midday, took Athol from African Pilot on a shooting flip by late afternoon to take pictures of his next pin-up girl in action, and saw a help-my-trap in the local garage, which I am going to buy and restore. On Sunday back to Wintervogel with a 20 miles per hour headwind from Aurora to FAWF.

Excellent going GC.. i guess most of us oldies getting a bit spoilt flying BB's and the like nowadays

Like the Goped idea and especially that you took the time to fly some of the locals - ive done the odd one in past and its something we talked about at Club mtgs previously, to take up youngsters from local farm schools in the area, but never got around to doing yet as i think most are concerned about risks ..($$) ($$)

Anyway, again.. way to go GC !! =D* =D* (^^)

Sorry to burst the bubble, but the "local" was Athol Franz of African Pilot, who was there to do an article on the Pipistrel, and I think he will also be doing an article of the finest microlight pilot in Namaqualand.

I take up as many passengers as I can (at my home field), and always think about the risks. After I have explained the safety features, and they still want to come aboard, I take them. After all, I never force anyone (not after the last and only one I forced, Aneen, barfed all over my trike and saw a divorce lawyer). That is a mess I am not prepared to clean up!

Gert, jy spot met my! I am still waiting for a response from Mr Franz, to squash any notions he may be hatching for an article! Perish the thought! Still, it was a great week-end, good company, super flying - hope more trikes join us for the 2007 fly-in.
