Hi Morph, I was at Republic Aircraft Parts today. They at Wonderboom Airport in Pretoria. I bought signal stips there. R 355.00. It's white pvc, a thick type. It has 4 500mm x 2.5m stips a steel reflector and a signal internationally accepted code like paper chart. I,m sur one could make it up. Even if no ELT or distress signal has been received, a visual search will commence as indicated in your Flight Plan, or Flight Itinerary. The search will start along your filed track, between your last known position and your destination, and expand from there. Searchers will be looking for anything out of the ordinary and their eyes will be drawn to any unnatural feature on the ground. Your aircraft has the best chance of being spotted if large portions of its wings and tail are painted in vivid colours. Keep your aircraft cleared of snow.

Many searches take at least 24 hours before rescue is accomplished. As soon as possible after landing, build a campfire. Make your site as conspicuous as possible. A smoke/smudge fire of green material should be prepared for instant lighting should you see or hear an aircraft. Three
fires in a triangle is the standard distress signal. One of the best conspicuity items now available on the market is a cloth panel of brilliant fluorescent colour. It is staked to the ground during the day and used as a highly effective ground signal. It can also be used as a lean-to shelter and it supplies warmth as a blanket.

The following symbols are to be used to communicate with aircraft when an emergency exists. Symbols 1 to 5 are internationally accepted; 6 to 9 are for use in Canada only.

NOTE: Use strips of White fabric or PVC sheeting, 500mm wide X 2500mm long. You will need 4. (I reckon one of moms sheets would work )

Endeavour to provide as big a colour contrast as possible between the material used for the symbols and the background against which the symbols are exposed.

Symbols should be at least 2.5m in height or larger, if possible. Care should be taken to lay out symbols exactly as depicted to avoid confusion with other symbols.

A space of 10 feet should separate the elements of symbol 6.

I am going to make up this card and have it laminated

Are there any numbers that we can put on the back that are crucial, i.e. Search and Rescue, CAA, police, emergency services etc. what do you think?

Here is a sample of the card A5, double sided. And Laminated

I am planning on using a white sheet, cut into 4 X 690mm X 2450 mm long. It can be used to signal, and at night offer some warmth

you can add a small polished alluminium plate to this as well 130mm x 80mm, and put the whole lot into a plastic document holder, A4.

4 strips, 690mm x 2450mm make up quite a large packet.
Now where would I put this in my trike

Arnulf you could put the four stips on top of each other then fold the breadth in half, then roll the length up in 250mm and you'll end up with the signal strips the size of an A4 piece of paper and about as thick as a bible. on second thoughts better take a bible as well

I am so glad that my trike has a 912 motor. Now all I must do is get bigger pannier bags to lug all this stuff around.

Is a compass compulsory?
I dont have one on my trike.

You need a magnetic compass, timepiece, Altimeter and Airspeed indicator
