I have just posted on the UK site asking if we are still welcome? If so we would be able to tag onto the hard work they have done. Our book was simply brilliant and mine was well used. But a app makes more sense. Alan, dont worry its simple stuff..

Now you can have a ipad or MGL device, iphone, Android etc. Find the airfield, set the destination and en route phone for fuel from the database, get current info....the works.

Just checked the UK forum, they will be more than satisfied to load our database as a country similar to France. Take al ook at the thread. So there you go Alan, its a heap easier than you thought...complete with a app as well....Maybe we post them a book to start with and edit the book by hand initially..

Paul, thanks for your effort.

The link you posted on the previous page takes me to some "123 build you own website" page?

Can you post the direct link for me please? Love to have a look...I think it would be good to make use of a system allready in use.

Either way we will have to gather info first. :)

Thanks.

Brilliant idea. The live, on-line forum, like the one posted by Paul, is the way to go. Also, we need to have a starting point of current information populated in the database. What comes to mind are the two books I use. One for short runways and the other for more GF runways. The only problem is the short runway book is not available in electronic format. (maybe we can ask the author to make it available). I have also build up an electronic database of South African airfields, runways, their direction and surface type from these books, other on-line sources, and Google Earth. I use this info to build an overlay map for my Garmin GPS276C and a map for my GPSIIIPlus. This info is obviously in electronic format and I would gladly make it available. I would also imagine this info could "easily" be converted into a format suitable for the UK site.

Contact details are problematic. Just imagine a little private farm strip owner publishing his private cell phone number. There will be reluctance. I am sure there is a way around this, like make it hidden to non registered users and available to paid registered users. Something like a non memeber, a basic free member and gold/premium member. If I am keen and planning a trip I will gladdly pay this small cost to upgrade to the premium membership.

I have just updated the info for FABA. Works like a charm....thanks again for the pointer DarkHelmet. xxx The database is very incomplete so, to all the Airfield owners and even pilots who know the fields details, PLEASE update the database.

Bundy, I don't know if this is exactly what you were proposing but the web site has great potential. (^^)

Forget the spreadsheet idea...not going to work. Too labour intensive.

Ian....I have also never seen that site before today.

This has got great potential! 8) Why did it not take off? :?

What I like about this set up is that anyone can create an Airfield entry. It means that if I load 5 and you load 5 others then the guy down the road etc etc...in no time at all we can literally have 100's or even 1000's listed?

Here are the challenges I (and Paul Mulder) see.

1: We need to find a secure way of displaying the Contact details giving restricted access to the browser (anyone) where the contact details are "hidden". Perhaps some sort of function can be set up where the contact details can be requested...and then say...PM'd to the user's ML account? Possible or not? The system is useless without contact details in my opinion.
2: Keeping it updated! How do we encourage those who create the entries to update them?
3: Getting all the pilots to create them in the first place
4: There should be a direct link to this wiki page on the forum? (Unless I've missed it?)

Let's work on this idea guys....I like the concept a lot, seems like the most practical way to do this so far? Where are all the IT bof's....(please speak English! )

Mike, as far as I can tell...on the top right corner you log in using your ML Uname and password...then you can create, edit all sorts.

I'ts actually very cool, but will need a change or two to allow us to display details and yet still maintain the owners privacy...some dont mind posting their tel no's...but others DO! :)

You are overcomplicating it, if someone is sensistive about a phone number don't post it and indicate how to get it. I am more worried about posting me email addy than I am my phone. When I post my phone I post it "oh seven wine six wine seven ate zero won won"!
