For years, I drove up and down past Microland on Friday and Sunday afternoons - driving to the family on Standerton for the weekend and back.. thinking to myself - "one day when I have lots of money.." This happened between my 25th and 34th birthday. Every time I drove by, I wanted to stop - but something in my head told me that you have to have lots of $$$ before you do this. And then one day I stopped, met Hans Schouten in his workshop, got Fanie Deysel's number, phoned him and explained apologetically that I want to start flying... what does it cost...etc. etc.

I was expecting some kind of "aloft" remark about affordability - instead - I got invited for my first lesson. During that lesson I found out that you can train according to your own budget. And I met the most down to earth people I ever encountered, a far cry from the perceptions I held. They are now Family to me! I wasted 9 years of flying because I thought it was a "rykmans-sport." It is not. Playing GOLF is a "rykmans sport". Less satisfying also, and probably more expensive than flying trikes - as you try to keep up with the Jones's, and the next expensive thing that you need to own in order to remain in the club. And certainly more pretentious.

In "Our World" we have a bunch of people who enjoy flying. I can count in my sphere of microlight-friends everything from a brain surgeon and a CEO of a BIG company, down to guys cutting it fine in order to have funds for fuel. It does not matter! Once we get together, NOTHING matters - except the shared passion of flight - in its purest form. When we social, we talk about flying. Not money in the bank or the latest fancy trends. Unlike golfers.

A big lesson for people who want to start flying: In your head, you think you must first buy a plane and safe up tens of thousands. NOT TRUE. ## You merely enroll, and then you start flying. On your own time and budget. Forget about buying a plane. As you train and get involved into the fraternity of trikers, all kinds of opportunities will open up for you. And once you are ready for it - YOUR FIRST PLANE WILL PRESENT ITSELF TO YOU! You will know it is right, and all of a sudden financials will start falling into place! You will then acquire your first plane - and you will bond with it.

From here - you will never look back! And you will find that you actually HAVE the money to pursue your dream - as cheaply or expensively as you want to!

For now - take the first step - hook out less than R1000, registrations included for your first full lesson - (yes - that same morning you have your first lesson).

From here - you will never ever look back. You will also meet in person some of the people on this forum, and you will see that they are also merely people who love flying. Remember - you do not start flying once you have your licence and your own aerie. You start flying once you enroll as a student. And that is affordable to anyone who really wants to do it!

phislett wrote:yea i can completely see what you mean.. but im still in school so its a few years now until i can start earning money.. the worst thing is that none of my family members share the same passion as me, so my dad wouldnt pay for my training ** in fact, my mom was quite pissed off that i actually went on a microlight.. I think she must get used to it because I'm gonna be doing it a lot more someday.. she has this set idea in her mind that its extremely dangerous and that i WILL die.. i disagree.. just driving to school everyday is 10x more dangerous.. I'm trying to convince her that its not that dangerous, but she wont change her mind.. so i guess when i start making my oown money then microlighting will become part of my life vhpy (-)
Shame boet - I can relate. I also wanted to fly when I was 13, but my Dad didn't want to fork out the money. Here is THREE tips for you:

1. NEVER loose your love for aviation;
2. Study hard, pass matric with distinctions in higher grade mathematics and science, and then apply to the airforce for admission as a fighter pilot.
3. In order to achieve (2) above - get away from the Internet and hit the books. (**)

( Ai, weet jy - die kinders met die "smart phones" deesdae....) Luister vir jou PA Boet - hierdie is Groot Ooms se geselsplek..
