Are Shadows still being built? I know that production stopped some years ago, but are folk still building them despite?

I recall reading about them some years ago all very highly praised articles and actually had a go in one and was very impressed, a real pity there are not more around?

Hi George,

Nice chatting to you!

I have replied to your mail, sorry, only saw it now.

It would be great to organize a Shadow fly-in, any idea of a nice central place we can hold it? Seems most Shadows are in KZN and GP

They were originally built by Len Alford of Shadowlite in Bothas Hill in KZN. He now owns the Jabiru factory in George.

Don't think they make them anymore but open to correction. Maybe David Cooke in England still dabbles in them.

I was checking builders projects on EAA site, 10 feb 08, there was a guy by the name of Jan Jacobs from Kempton Park building a Streak Shadow. Tried to email him and seems the email address no longer exists. Does anyone know this character or anything about the plane? From what i've found out the Shadow operation failed twice, but Shadow Flight Centre in the UK still supply parts. not sure if they still building or suppling kits.
Very nice looking Gyro, there is one in my hangar at light flight, owned by a guy by the name of Arthur, also seen one at Himeville in the Drakensberg.
By the way Dragons Peak is just around the corner from Durban 75nm and 196nm from Rhino. Newcastle and Bethlehem are most central. What you think Rudi?

I don't think they are being build anywhere in the world anymore. After production in the UK stopped they were still build in the USA (Laron) and here in SA (Shadow light). Most recent production was in Australia but I think that might also have stopped.

Sad, but the are great planes and were may years ahead of their time.

Jan came around and had a look at my Shadow a while ago, seemed that he was close to flying but never heard from him again, will see if I can find contact details.

As far as location goes I am happy with whatever the majority decides, maybe we should have a few suggestions and then a vote?

Fly safe,
Rudi

About a fly in, you been flying longer than me, so when do you think the weather is gonna be best for this, and how soon would you like us to do this? Would this be best planed as a day trip or an overnighter? I also have to wait for Jas to get this ATF with his engine mod, then we will be 4 shadows alone, providing we all have a matching weekend off. Do you have any idea when Mark will be licenced on the Shadow?
Been looking forward to a trip like this since i got my licence.
Waiting in anticipation

Hi George.

The weather is always a potential problem. Depending on when we want to do this (I think soonish?) we won't have much of a choice. If we wait for winter there would be less chance of storms but that is a long wait. I believe best would be to set a date and see if it works, if the weather does not play along we move the date. Normally we can at least see real bad stuff coming a few days ahead so we can plan accordingly.

It might be best to plan an overnighter, gives us more flexibility to avoid afternoon storms and will allow us to fly the long legs in nice smooth morning air without having to worry about daylight if there is a headwind. That way we can also have a nice sundowner flight in the afternoon to go and look at the great area we will be in.

We should have 3 Shadows from Rhino, I am sure Mark will be sorted out on his Shadow very soon and Conroy is ready. We just need to wait for Jas, maybe we can also find a few more Shadow owners.

This could be great fun!!

Hi Rudi,
Our guys are ok with Dragons peak, seems like you guys are VERY keen to do the long haul! I'll do some enquiring about accom at Dragons Peak and let you know. would you guys prefere Dec or Jan? I agree, we need to do this soonish! If the guy with the gyro is keen to come along, I'll see if our gyro guy is keen. Dont know about you, but i only know of the 4 Shadows that are flying down here, and one thats almost ready, been under repair for 19mths. Unfortunately his emigrating in Jan.
Always great to see good new pictures. Can you explain how to add pictures.
Marks idea for anyone who wants to come along is not a bad idea. What you think?

I'm going to fly now, while the sun's still out.

Speak to Brett or Lynn Tungay at Dragons Peak. 036 468 1031

Brett used to instruct at Light Flight and the Tungays have a long association with Light Flight and are always accomodating to pilots.

Cheers and enjoy it
