Received the following SMS

Postby John Young » Wed Jan 02, 2008 6:39 pm

Hi,

Received the following SMS from Rudi at 06h00 this morning –
Dear John and the Gang in KZN.

Unable to fly down today. Tanya buggered up the gearbox and used the oil as a hair dye.

Sadly yours
Rudi
Truth –

Rudi’s gearbox packed up – it ate a few shims for the main course and then got stuck into an oil seal for desert. Tanya’s hair got covered in gearbox oil. Trip aborted at last minute. :(

Second attempt scheduled for before end-April 2008. !!!!

Hi John,

Yes, gives a new meaning to "A Slick Blond" :D

The %$^^& Rattax (Gearbox)

I have had more gearbox problems than any other technical problem on the Rans.....

Did some research on Jabiru engine mounts for the Rans, and yes, they are available :D Watch this space....

Looking forward to April, at least the weather should be better so we will have more time to explore the area.

Thanks for your help and also everyone who offered or wanted to join, guys, this is a postponement not a cancellation :D

Fly safe,
Rudi

PS, I am glad to see that this post inspired a few other trips ! Well done everyone !

WOW Chris, you guys are fast! That's just slightly less than the Mizer's all out speed one up - maybe I'll change my name to slow poke  & maybe I should consider her to be a one seater, take a hacksaw & cut off a third of the wing on each side.

Not to worry though, the KR2 will solve all of this. I am highly motivated to complete it and maybe this year still I'll... we'll see.

In the meantime Rudi wants to fit a Jabi to his Rans S-12. Rudi, should you want to sell the 618, please, please remember the bargain I negotiated for you and allow me to be first in line! I'll cope with the gearbox problems if I have to.

See you all at Rhino weather permitting.

Hi Chris & Henni,

Chris, great to hear from you ! Yes, it will be great if you can join in April, it will be a "Trip of note" :D

Henni, Yes, your name is on the 618, I worked on the gearbox this morning, after 2 x 2 hour flights there seems to be no metal in the oil, hope it is solved. It still has a slight oil leak but I have not replaced the oil seal yet, the leak is very small though, will look at it next week. I am also planning on trying to get my hands on a Jabiru 2200A next week......

Are you going to Rhino tomorrow (Friday)? A few guys from Rhino and Microland are planning on flying to Groblersdal (70 miles from Rhino) with trikes, I am planning on tagging along, want to join ? Speeds should be no problem, you will be one of the faster planes :D

The plan is to leave at 6am WX permitting.

Hope to see you !

Fly safe,
Rudi

Hi Rudi,

Okay, thatsit then, I WILL be there!

Thanx - just maybe my fuel will make it to and thro seeing that we'll be flying within my economy range(60mph). Clinton offered to sit this one out for my sake and that'l make a huge difference to fuel consumption.

Never the less, I'll take extra two stroke oil along just in case. Looking very, very much forward to this trip.

Henni

Hi Henni,

COOL 8)

I have been looking for an excuse to stop at Middelburg anyway :D

It works out as 70 miles to Groblersdal, then 34 miles to Middelburg and a final 58 miles back home.

See you in the morning :D

Rudi

Hi everyone,

Well, me & Rudi were the only ones who even bothered to go out to the airfield this morning. Needless to say we were just about washed away by heavy rain. The SABC weather forecast was by far more accurate than the aviation forecasts. I'll stick to gardening for today

Weather permitting, we'll attempt the Witbank breakfast tomorrow morning (Saturday). I really hope we can at least get one more nice X-country in before normal working routine starts on Monday.

Keep well all,
Henni

Hi Henni,

Thanks for pitching this morning, at least we had a good chat !

Lets hope tomorrow is better....

I managed to load the waypoints on your GPS, it does use the same cable as the Pilot III

See you tomorrow,
Regards,
Rudi
PS, I got WET on the way back  At least it was not that cold !

Rudi, GREAT! Now I can also navigate using my GPS for a change. See you tomorrow morning - hope we can fly as planned. Been promising a trip to Witbank for quite some time now & it's time to deliver on that promise.

Henni
