My Luck...or lack thereoff......

Postby Aerosan » Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:42 pm

So I need a 4x4, double cab as the wife and kids have to fit somewhere and turbo diesel as it makes sence. So then after three looooong months of looking I find my candidate, even more than needed (turbo protector, CRD development chip, snorkel, canopy, 12v external plug and much more) at a price that I can afford (barely but still puff xxx ) and last night I take delivery. vhpy

The previous owner really took care of this baby and it shows :P the doors click close, the leather seats are as good as new and all this in a 2002 model. So it’s not new but remember this is a toy basically to carry diving stuff and whatever the wife and kids need, to beach from the campsite. This morning I drive it to work and there is the problem :x , a blown head gasket. I phone the dealer and profoundly express my disappointment and he accepts responsibility, telling me that I can take the car to a dealer for repairs and that they will pick up the tab with no damage to me, should I wish to keep the car. I agree to keep it and he sends a tow truck to collect. The tow truck promptly arrives and we very very carefully hook the bakkie. On the way to Kdorp a taxi skips the robot and totals the tow truck, but my bakkie survives. So now shell go for repairs and in a week a should have a bakkie again.
So if you had a bad day I hope that I just made it better…… (**)

At the same time that they fix that headgasket let them remove that CRD chip. Let me guess - it's either one of the ford/mazda 2.5 turbo diesles or a colt 2.8 turbo diesel?.
Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.

Colts have a history of blown headgaskets. It comes from 2 places - either the vehicle overheated at some point or they turn the fueling and boost up so much that it's past the point of where the engine falls in the live happily ever after area. On diesels when you add fuel only your combustion temps go through the roof. So you have to add boost. Now depending on how much of each they did you can sit with a situation where your engine is not a happy camper. So in any case - if you don't take the chip off - get yourself a boost gauge and install egt in the manifold pre-turbo. Realistically you should not see more than a bar boost(which is already quite bit) and not more than around 700 degrees celcius EGT before turbo. If you are over those specs best you be ready to spend a lot more money on that engine in the long run. Sadly CRD in my books does not have a very good reputation. I have seen them screw up a couple of cars.

Thanx Stephen

It makes perfect sence :!: I do now that it overheated before I bought it and so that would ring true :| anyway it was my intention to install both the boost and the EGT in any case so that is a good idea then. vhpy

.......and move the spotlights, like in the Ford. I have my second Colt now. Great bakkie, but eeeish, that spotlights in front of the radiator, she does not like.

In later models they actually came without the spotlights.
