Hi

Glad youre ok. Its a sad state and thats why I left.I miss S.A but hearing these things makes me know i did the right thing. Just my 2c worth though from my experiences in security there. People are creatures of habit and that is something the criminals use to their advantage.Everyone speeds past the bad areas as fast as they can. I dont believe in this approach. The common thing is to put objects in the road to damage tyres and at high speeds its not easy to avoid objects in the street. If youre driving at a speed of say 40 k/h and you see a obstrucrion you have more time to asess the situation and turn around, speed up,wake your passengers or shoot.Try doing any of that at 120 k/h? Nobody can stop you or open the car door at that speed so youre still safe all be it a slower target should they try  .Please im not trying to say you did wrong at all im just giving you something to think about. Well done for fighting back many would not.

My family have a motto, which we have had since about 1998 when we were nearly wiped off the earth by a taxi coming back from Sun City late one night.

NEVER DRIVE IN AFRICA AFTER DARK

I have had 2 situations similar to this, both at Orange Farm on the N1 going to JHB. The first I was going up from CT on holiday. I was towing a trailer with my Honda Blackbird on it. Time was about 6 to 7pm and it was raining fairly heavily. I was in the right lane coming around a long sweeping bend to the right when suddenly I saw a complete wishbone, and brakedrum of a vehicle lying in the road. all I could do was swerve so as not to hit it with my tyres. It could the underside of the car (Alfa 147) and I bounced, the trailer cuaght it as well and It too bounced. I immediately watched my temps and kept driving. fortunattely apart from destroying the front bumper, bending the radiator and aircon condensor no other damage (R17K  to repair)

A few years later Gr8-dad and I went up to Jozie to go fetch my Bush Baby kit. He was driving and I warned him about the possibility of there being stuff in the road. This time is was 3am and no rain. Lo and behold, a frikken puppy, with it's feet tied to stop it walking off the road in the left lane. The bastards probably had a whole box of them, in case one got ridden over

Iagree, shoot to kill,no way i am going to stand by and watch these dogs rape and rob,be aggresive, responsive and very loud and noisy.Ihave never been in that sitution and hope i never will but i cannot see myself to adopt the attitude of give them what they want as the leaders of our beloved country try to teach us.Glad you reacted and got of unharmed.

Couple years back I was working Jhb (special duties ja official), and we were called out to Vereniging i think it was called.

As we were passing Oranje farm kak, we encountered a road with bolders placed in the road, totally blocking the road - badluck for them we were the wrong target - armered vehicle with a lot of guns - one send to who knows were - his not with us any more and others wounded after they started shooting at us.

The good old days.

Thaks guys I appreciate the advise and supporting words. One thing I can say, I am glad I did't wound OR kill anyone of them however I would have liked to do that. Strange how the law protects those criminals SPECIALLY when you kill one. I couldn't see if they had any weapons and besides, I wasn't going to let them get too close just to find out he had a pipe or a knife or for this argument, a gun! I think I had the upper hand with my surprise as I didn't hesitate to fire.
Anyhow all's well for now, the aerrie is at Flo's and I am busy spending some time on her!
Will keep u's posted on the progress! Fly safe!

It is very important that we share this experiences with our wifes/partners and kids. Most of us know what to do and have a better chance of dealing with a situation like this - HOWEVER - our kids and partners are so NAIVE with these things and their first concern would be not to damage the car - and this is our job - to continually coach them to keep driving as far as they can before having to stop at a safe location -stuff the possible vehicle damage - not worth the chance.

And I can't agree with you more, it is so true. I have re-lived the situation probably a 1000 x afterwards and you know what, I did what I did instinctively. I stopped to assess the damage and possibly thange the tyre BUT I should have carried on driving. The only question that kept comming back in my mind was, "where would have been a save place to stop"? I am glad I had my firearm and I shiver thinking of people driving there without one!

Anywhere just not there. They rely on the fact that you are going to stop within a couple of 100 meters. If you keep driving for a few Kilometers there is much less chance they will have guys stationed all the way along the road. Drive on the rimms if you have to, and cook the motor if you have to. In the meantime call for help.

I fully agree (m) : drive, the further you away, the safe - remember they know that area.
