ANGUS BUCHAN GETUIENIS
Brethren,
Truly for once in my life I am at a loss for words, to even try to describe vaguely what happened at the mens conference at Shalom.
Acts 2:1,2 describes very accurately what happened - we were all gathered together in the Tabernacle, over 500+ men from every corner of this Nation, not to mention our neighbours, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and even men from as far a field as New Zealand. We had come together just like the Folk in the Book of Acts, “to hear from God.â€Â
“God did not disappoint us!â€Â
Numbers 29:19 tells us clearly that our Master is not a liar!
Friday night we were reminded that in order to ‘finish the Task’ (our theme for this year’s conference), we need to get real, and know that there is a huge battle we’re involved with. As God’s Mighty Men, we are going to be subjected to many afflictions, Ps 34:19 and the fight will intensify until Jesus returns. But the good news is, that Romans 8:11 says, if the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us, He shall ‘Quicken’ our mortal bodies, so we have nothing to fear, if God is with us in this fight.
The next morning God spoke to us about checking our MOTIVES! That if our motives were anything or anyone but Jesus Christ, it was not going to succeed! There was much conviction, and repentance, as we were reminded by our Lord Holy Spirit, that we could not finish the Task; if we had any hidden agendas or any ulterior motives. We all adjourned and went out into the fields for a time spent alone with God, (He had already started the breaking down process), where He was already dealing with us. The afternoon session started at 3pm, a meeting I shall never forget as long as I live, indeed God visited us!! We spoke on 2 Corinthians 5:17 through to verse 21, the Holy Spirit reminded each one of us, that we are called to be Ambassadors for Jesus and that we’ve been called to a ministry of reconciliation, man with God, and man with man. The Lord told us in no uncertain terms, that we could not be used by Him, if we have ought against our Brothers, that it has to start with us, and that Charity begins at Home. Then the fire of God literally started to descend. A big, strong, burly Farmer got up, walked across to his son, a fine-looking young farmer in his late thirties, and embraced him publicly, and unashamedly, asking for forgiveness, his son responded, weeping, also asking for reconciliation.
Then the floodgates burst, and men weeping everywhere were coming forward, onto the platform, and seeking forgiveness, healing and restoration with one another. There was an incredible cleansing and washing that took place in the next few hours, (the service lasted for five hours, and it seemed like a few moments), no one moved from their chairs apart from going to the bathroom. Some of the ladies outside who were waiting to serve the tea eventually gave up and went home, as God continued to deal with 500+ broken, weeping, men. There were men there, who were confessing, and releasing burdens that they had carried for over twenty years, like “Mom and Brother, I forgive you for selling off my inheritance.â€Â
There was another man, weeping, asking God to forgive him for only getting the Church on his farm to floor level and having stopped. He was going home to spend more time with his dear wife, and to finish building the Church.
Another huge, strong man, with tears running down his face stood on the platform, and asked his teenage son, sitting somewhere in the crowd of men, to please forgive him for never telling him that he was good enough or that he was proud of him! As this big man stepped down from the platform, a tall strapping young man came running down the aisle towards his father, the two embraced in the passage way for a long time, weeping in each others arms.
A father, who loves Jesus very much, and who is a personal friend of mine, stepped up to the platform, tears of repentance streaming down his face, called his three sons forward, tall powerfully built young men, and he asked them to please forgive him for the terrible pain he had caused them, through having taken them through two divorces in his life. They took hold of their dad, and hugged him for some time, saying, “We forgive you Dadâ€Â, through a flood of tears, “and we love you!â€Â
Another scene I shall take to heaven with me, was three brothers in their late teens, going into late twenties, came up to the platform, and asked their father (who wasn’t present) to please forgive them for hurting him! But they made it very clear that they have to obey God, and whatever He tells them to do, they must complete, for their first allegiance is to Jesus and their second to him. As they shared, there was not a dry eye in the Tabernacle!
Husbands were on the stage, weeping, asking God to please help them to love their wives more, and to be good fathers to their children!
Then something happened that I have never seen in twenty five years of preaching. Churches started coming up on the platform, and asking forgiveness of one another for Church differences etc. and reconciliation took place!
Finally at 8pm, having continued solidly with no break, we finished with the breaking of bread. It was such a simple and pure but effortless time together because we knew, that our sins had been forgiven, and that Jesus was pleased with us, and Father was proud of His sons, and our Lord Holy Spirit was brooding over the Tabernacle!
Sunday morning came, and all the families joined with the men – it was indeed a celebration service, women already commenting that something wonderful has happened to their spouses. Jesus reminded us of the importance of teamwork in His Kingdom, especially among the Christian family. It’s the “Whole Family†united together which makes the impact on an unbelieving world.
We made the altar call for commitment, and many responded. Then the call was made for full-time service, and after reminding the people of the sacredness, and binding effect that a Vow has, using the sad story of Japhtah and his daughter, we asked all those who wished to serve Jesus Christ full time to come forward. We were astounded to see close on forty men and women come forward. Once again we felt compelled to warn the folk at the altar, about the seriousness of the commitment, and not one of them flinched – they remained resolute and steadfast. So we commissioned them, prayed over them, and sang to them, another emotional moment.
In conclusion, once again, our dear friends, thank you so very much for all your prayers, and love. As a result of this weekend, we know that lives, Families, Businesses, and Churches have been changed forever. Joshua said: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.†(Joshua 24:15)
God bless
Lots of love
Angus, Jill and the Shalom Family.
