Night Trike

Postby Bubble Guts » Fri Nov 30, 2007 10:27 am

Been following the landing lights thread over in technical and wondered if any one had more info on flying at night? If all safety measures are in place would it be legal? If it was legal, how many of you guys would want to fly at night??

15 minutes. I see there is someone in the states that got his night rating on a trike.

There was a post a while back with a vidie link to an air show somewhere in the big sand pit. There was a trike display all at night. Looked awesome.
It must be a fantastic experience to fly a trike at night.

Legally and logistically there is nothing preventing a trike from getting night ATF, but I asked CAA and they said "NEVER" - end of discussion? No reasons simply NO.? :?

Ok, so if it was legal, how many of us would want to fly at night?

Was yanking your chains
I would never fly my micro in SA at night.
However........have flown many, many night hours over the bush in Zim, for fun and anti-poaching using Quicksilvers and later a Cosmos trike. There was hardly ever any traffic where I was during daylight, let alone low level at night.
The first time I did it was take-off at sunset, full moon. Big mistake as it takes a few hours for the moon to rise high enough to light the runway properly. After that I used to get airborne when the moon was already high, anything from half moon or more and always in winter in good wx.
Provided there is a good moon and weather, no built-up areas with wires which are invisible at night, flying wise I see no danger at all.
The big danger is other air traffic as well as built up areas and thats why I would not try it these days in SA.
It is definitely illegal for good reason so don't try.
