Intro / 120kg question ?!

Postby lawotschkin » Mon Aug 25, 2014 11:24 am

Hi All,

I'm Daniel and new to this forum. I learned flying almost 10 years ago in Nelspruit and I am normally pushing an old Cessna 172 around ..
I immigrated to SA from Germany 2 years ago and now wanted to continue a very innovative composite 120kg microlight project I started from scratch some years ago in Germany (almost half way there).

What I am trying to understand now:
  • * is there a 120Kg mircolight class existing in SA (I didnt find anything on that so far) similar to the US FAR Part 103 (http://www.usppa.org/Resources/FARs/part103_far.htm) ?
    * if not - are there any intentions / activities ongoing at SACAA to establish that class ?
    * if not - are any other people or companies lobbying on that or have intentions to do so ?
    * does anyone have experience with regards to certification of homebuilds / microlights and the SACAA, who is willing to share that info for some beers ?
thanks a lot for your feedback & best regards !!

thanks nicow !!

meawhile I found .. na ja at least some traces ..
South Africa

SACAA - LS1
Further suggestions may be made by MISASA

Type approval, authority to fly
Empty weight 330 lb (150 kg) and MTOW 638 lb (290 kg)
Fuel capacity not regulated
No maximum speed
No maximum stall
Day VFR outside controlled airspace, etc
Pilot only
MISASA MPL and Telkom radio operator's licence, registration, annual inspection and full flight crew medical required
Additional noteworthy limitations: First of type approval is complex and includes a 40 hour test period
Comment: Howzit. You guys really do have Tiger Country ...

SACAA site doesn't allow searches so not much else I can add here without ploughing through their laws. I couldn't find a copy of the LS1 document online.

Contact MISASA - http://www.weboonline.com/misasa/home.php?Store=misasa
so with 150kg empty and 290 kg MTOW it's definitely something smaller than a "normal" microlight ..

copied from: http://www.homebuiltairplanes.com/forum ... untry.html

can anyone point me to that LS1 document ?

thx & cheerio !

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to ML. (^^)

Sounds like a great project, I look forward to your pics (^^)

I unfortunately do not know the answer to your question....but I would give the following two people a call and ask their advice.

Rowena Kraidy 08 three306nine980. (Misasa Tech Committee Exco)

or Pierre Laubsher at RAASA (Recreational Aviation Admin of SA)
http://www.raasa.co.za/index.php?option ... &Itemid=49

They will at least be able to tell you who the Issuing Authority is responsible for this type of Microlight and or ratings required, from there you can go forward with your enquiries.

Good luck. (!!)

Hi Daniel,
We do not have a part 103 in SA. All NTCA (non type certified) aircraft fall under part 24. LS 1 was replaced with part 24 so the information you have is out dated. We can help you with your paperwork. Give me a call sometime. www.saplanes.co.za

thanks a lot KFA !! will surely come back to you as soon I am at that stage .. must get a new workshop up and running now - if somebody has some space to share in JoBurg ..

@Bundy: here are some pics of the beginnings in Berlin - as you can see we are going the negative mold route ('the long walk to freedom') - the weight targets and the complex geometry of the wings don't really allow something else (strongly tapered with washout) .. unfortunately I can not yet disclose the overall design - will do at a later stage .. I fear some of you will come up with a lot of funny questions and comments now ..

vertical tail fin:

elevator:

hot-wiring the wing plugs with MEGAPLOT in Poland:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 024&type=3
laminating the wing plugs:

next step would be to take negative molds from the wing plugs ..

cheerio !
