Doesn't really matter.

If hard wired into trike electrical system (ie not of battery and does not get removed) then considered "Fixed" then need license for aerie.

If battery powered or runs off lead from cigarette plug and can function on it's own (maybe does does not sleep in the plane for eg) then you need a license...

Hey Henry6iix, we are not talking about the restricted radio license the pilot needs (this you get for life and you need it before you can go solo), we are talking about a license the plane needs to have the radio installed. (This apparently needs to be renewed every year

Yes Morph that is correct the radio in a plane doesn`t matter if it is a blikarie or a micro if it is fitted to a plane then u need to renew the licence each year. I hold 3 licences 1,Ham licence 2, dealer and last a pilot

the 1st 2 need to renewed each year

Been sifting through all the C&%P on the ICASA site and eventually had a look at the actual legislation and basically everyone needs a license for a transmitter the only exceptions are those for scientic research and radio telescopes  . Unless somewhere in one of the amendments they exclude handhelds. Mailed them but I doubt I will get a reply anytime soon.

It looks like this is one of the things that you pay every year, no-one polices it, the CAA doesn't seem to care and you get nothing out of having a license.

They have all the forms as huge PDF scans (2meg) for two pages. I have downloaded them and if your e-mail handles big files I will be happy to mail them to who-ever is interested. The cost is 380ront.

Now imagine the following: you are involved in a prang and seriously damage the plane and/or hurt yourself.
Insurance refuse to pay out cause you do not have a legal radio station licence  is this possible :?:  :?:

Yip. I think they will refuse. Also the new air cops are looking for radio station license. If you don't have one they will ground you.

Also AMO's (for bliks) want to see the radio station license before they will release to service after MPI...

As far as life / disability cover, I don't see the relevance of whether the radio base licence is current or not. The PIC is licenced to operate the radio, assuming the radio is in working order and suited for it's purpose and the incident was'nt the direct result of radio miscommication.

As far as short term insurance, strap tight the chasticy belt, coz I think they'll try scew you any loophole they find.

Breach of ANR's. ICASA/CAA require you not only to have one, but to carry it in the plane...
