Good to meet you Peter and great to see you again Vernon at your home airfield, at last!! vhpy vhpy

The Eva’s Field gang visited Munster International last week and what a fun day we had with some interesting weather to deal with on the way there and on the way back too…

Pottie Potgieter joined me in my Savannah accompanied by Alan Robinson and Selwin Hohls in their Day-Glo Cheetah. Our plan was to get airborne early to be at Munster by 8am but as usual for this time of year in KZN we were fog bound at our airfield and had to delay our departure until it had lifted sufficiently for us to take off. The plan was to fly to Richmond skirting the Maritzburg CTR then to Scottburgh and south down the coast rather than the direct routing. A quick couple of calls to establish the cloud base in Maritzburg and towards the coast and given the thumbs up we took off, but as we established our routing to Richmond we could see there were patches of cloud in our path and with Maritburg operational we asked for special VFR clearance to fly through their airspace. ATC were very accommodating although there was inbound IF traffic from Johannesburg we were cleared west of their circuit, thanks Sakkie (^^)

We routed directly towards Umkomaas avoiding areas of low cloud base arriving at the coast in wonderful smooth conditions into the sunshine, we flew land wise of the shore line at 1500ft and soon we were into the Margate ATC area, the controller cleared us straight through for Munster and we picked up Vernon who was airborne in his Savannah waiting to escort us in. I followed him in for the landing on 04 with Alan behind us. Flying time 1 hour 35 minutes with a very light headwind all the way, great  It will help on the return trip.

After a quick look around at their beautiful field, you guys have a wonderful place there…  we drove across to MacBannana’s for quick breakfast just up the road

A quick call to home to confirm the weather conditions which were clear blue skies we returned to the airfield !!!!

The wind was still blowing lightly from the south so we took off towards Port Edward and over the Umtumvuna river, did a 180 to head back up the coast with the plan to route the same way
It was so beautiful and smooth again at 1500ft this time seawards of the shore line, there was quite a bit of helicopter traffic low level taking people for flips up and down the coast so we needed to avoid that. Soon our tail wind became a headwind so our progress was slowed a little but it was so beautiful up there it did not matter (!!)

at Scottburg we turned inland and ahead of us was cloud again  it had not cleared much since the flight to the coast earlier (**)

There was plenty of traffic in the Eston Richmond area who reported clear sunny conditions so we continued as planned vhpy

we knew if the cloudbase got low we could return to the coast but it was not long before we were in wonderful clear conditions but extremely hot, It was now the middle of the day so the thermals were quite strong and we had quite a bumpy trip via Richmond and back to our home field.

The return flight was just over 2 hours because of the headwind but what a lot of fun. Can’t wait to do it all over again

Thanks Vernon and Peter for the invitation and next time it’s your turn to visit us (^^) (^^)

Hi James.
Our pleasure having you there. It was nice for our new comer Peter to meet a couple of new faces. He must be getting tired of this old face. (no horrible comments please) As we said at breakfast, when the weather is more predictable. April, May, June and july, we will most definatly organise a flyin brekki. Will just have to make sure Beach Bum is not working that day. Somebody has to cook!!!
All the best for now.
Vernon.

Hello James

It was lovely to meet you all,I intend to fly as much as the weather permits when I can, and to do some overland trips, I have a tent which will go with me so being out for a night or two is no problem, all I need it to learn where and when to go, and with Vernons help I will not go far wrong

I look forward to meeting you on your field in the future

All the best
Peter
