PPL or LSA?

Hey guys,

I have managed to get a mate of mine addicted to flying.(I told him before we took off the first time.... this is not a hobby!... Its a disease! haha)

He loved the trike but would like to fly a 3axis. His Late father used to fly a Cessna 182 but financially I dont think he will be able to purchase something like that at this time. His budget would be more suited to something like a Jabiru or Savannah etc.

What would you guys in the know suggest he train on? Will it be better to do a PPL (And at least leave the door open for the possibility that one day he can afford something in the Cessna class in the distant future) or should he just do a straight LSA?

Would apprectiate your thoughts?

If he's starting from scratch ppl, no question.

Also more oppertunities to hire and fly which is the cheapest option if you fly less than about 40 hours per year.

I held a PPL for more than 40 years, but let it lapse, as it became a real expensive pain to keep up. Nowadays I fly with my NPL, and still enjoying my flying. I thought the novelty would wear off after so many years..... but it did not!!

PPl on jab should cost you the same per hour as Npl on same jabiru. It is a lot easier to downgrade to npl as to upgrade to ppl.

Hey Bundy.
What does he want to do? Fly long distances, all over the country or just enjoy the flying.
I enjoy myself in my Savannah, flying down the coast a couple hundred Km, some inland trips, and quite a lot of the old cabbage patch flying.

If he has no medical issues, then do a PPL on a Jabbi , only a little bit more expensive than NPL on same aircraft . I still keep 3 licences current ,NPL , PPL, GPL (motorglider), and it is NOT that expensive to maintain, just share the flying between them

@Vernon, He travels up to Zambesi quite often for fishing and wants to be able to Hire and fly a Cessna or similar for this purpose. He has a wife and two kids so a Savannah might be too small?
But he also wants to be able to fly a "cheaper" in terms of running costs airplane purly for the recreational side of things. I tend to agree with T bird here in that although he cant really afford to buy a Cessna, he should do his PPL so that an "upgrade" later from a Jabiru will not require a whole new licence?

Bundy....The purpose is the deciding factor here! If he wants to be able to carry his family - PPL .... The LSA route limits him to 1+1

I have a PPL and fly my Cheetah on this licence but I also fly Jab 400 / 430's and often get stick time on either a Cessna 337 or Bonnie thus affording me the pleasure of taking my family with if need be!

Thanks for the replies everyone... I apollogise for the incorrect topic... It should have been PPL or NPL!

I have relayed your advice to the guy and I'm pretty sure he will be doing his PPL. He has never flown in a Jabiru or Savannah before, is there anyone based at Rhino or Kitty Hawk that would be willing to give him a taste? If so please PM me and I will forward your details to him.

Give Marlize at LSAT - Rhino a call they do NPL and PPL training on Jabiru's . I am currently doing an upgrade to a PPL wiht them.
