Hi T-Bird
The answer is pretty straightforward.
If the instructor is rated on taildraggers as well as nosewheel then it's an "Unrestricted Open Rating."
Instructors with only nosewheel types could be classified as a "Nosewheel Restricted Open Rating."
Hi Len
My knowledge of Gyro's is zero. Reading through your interesting post it immediately becomes evident that this is a totally different type of flying what with pre-rotaters etc. As such the question of Open Ratings should realistically be formulated by the CFI's, in other words...the people who know what they are talking about.

I feel your pain. I have flown a couple 100 hrs in my aerie in last 5 years and have yet to do a skills test in it.

Renewal/skills test usually goes something like this.

Find flight school with aerie for H&F for renewal. Often get convex onto that aerie while doing the flight test then never fly the type ever again.
Last year I did a flight test on 172 which I have not flown since 1996... Was a bit rusty to say the least and not knowing where instruments/guages were and fumbling for stall and other speeds did not help.... Passed but was frustrating...

Most frustrating is getting the you are "safe" but your xyz needs a little work.... ## ## ## ## Last year was exception and I throughly enjoyed it... (^^)

When I was initially issued with my licence a year ago the validity, irrespective of previous experience, was for 12 months after which one has to do a "skills test" before going on to the 2 year flight test cycle.
Having studied Part 62 CARS I came across Competency 62.01.9 which states "the holder of a Recreational Pilot Licence shall undergo a general proficiency check not later than 24 months since the issue of the licence or a previous proficiency check".
Nowhere do I find any reference to a 12 month period.
Now what is the situation?
What have I missed?

Initial is 12 months regardless of license then 24 month cycle. So you get flight test every 2 years and every alternate year you fill in a form and pay bucks.

Yo Rv.... you can just opt for the 24 month cycle after the initial 12 month. You just pay double 'one time' :) This saves the schlepp of doing it every 12 months.....

Not anymore. CAA will no longer accept a 2 year payment. They want the 61.03.? every alternate year and will only renew for 12 months. I have tried with 3 PPL's in last 4 months. All got same answer.... Every 12 months they want their money and a copy of the logbook or a renewal test....

Stupid, maar nou JA....
