Had a similar experiance six years ago doing my dual cross country. Thank the lord my instructor was on the back. Flying from Tanqua to Portaville in a 503, could not get altitude and we decided to go across the mountains. Got bliksemed! (**) (**) Never again will I attempt crossing a ridge with a head or tailwind, unless I have plenty of air below me. Very good lesson learned.

Regards,

Rusty

Hi Tobie

This is actually a Lady and she is an instructor.

Sue

Please can you give more info as you cannot just say something like that and then leave us all hanging - Why do you say this is rubbish :?:

Tailspin, thanks

From the name I thought the person may be a lady but I really would like to hear her view, especially being an instructor as I do believe many of us has had similar experiences. Maybe we missing something or do we ignore the comment.

I have always maintained that the Micro-meteorology portion of the syllabus is a little light. Many of us came from a hanggliding or paragliding background where we were taught the dangers over and behind mountains/ridges and any obstacle for that matter.

Glad you got through it okay.

Hi Toby

Lets give Sue a chance, Maybe she sees things differently and I for one would like to know what it is. I like to learn from others mistakes, i have made enough of my own and some i would rather learn from a person / Pilot / instructor who can maybe get my ass out of a jam when i need it like the thread was started.

Come Sue please man explain as you may see it differently to us.

I do not understand the comment made by Sue.
What I do Know and had the misfortune to experience was the insignificance of a lyttle trike against the elements of nature.
Myself and Larry Mcgee, also an instructor, were caught in severe turbulance.
It was Mountain terrain between Stellenbosh and Mosselbaai.
We were flying in a valey between two mountain ranges..
During the time of absolutely having NO controle over the aircraft I was, unable to use my PTT, It was impossable to try to use the controle bar, for moments I was standing on my footrest's, The noise of the engine was uneven and at a pitch, my groundspeed indicator went up to 128nm PH. And Yes I thought I was going to die...I was like a feather in the wind..
If Sue think this is a "lot of bull" just ask Larry Mgee!!! ( But he is in Tanzania at this moment.!!) ##
Hope it never happens again.

I have a suspicion that Sue may have got a mis-post. Maybe someone who knows her can ask her to reply on this thread?

I doubt that she would be so trite about such an event.

Many moons back i had a flight that was smooth as could be- (flat ground mild wx)- and out of the blue the bar was yanked wildly for a second; the trike felt like it was being torn apart- and then settled down to nothing............ that day needed a change of undies when i landed.

Well done on keeping your wits whatever the cause or situation.

Turbulance like this is no joke. Never take a smooth calm day for granted. If there is a mountain, respect it, go high. As Blue Max said, you cant do anything else except try control the bar. Was there when they were thrown around but much higher at 10 000 ft over the Franschhoek mountains and did not feel much, just bumps. Always take what you read or hear as something to learn from, no matter how many hours you have. It might save your bacon.
