TRACKING DEVICE FOR PILOTS ?

Postby wiskeyfoxtrot » Tue Oct 20, 2009 7:27 am

Just read about the paragliging accident in Dunoter,

Is there not some type of tracking device that pilots can carry, that can be triggered to help find the pilot quickly. Anybody out there have any info or ideas ?.
In this day and age there must some type of lightweight tracking device?

Just a thought :?:

There are many options on the market for a price :?

An Option:

vfrPlanner/vfrTracker is based on cellular technology allowing you to send your position, heading, speed and altitude at a set time interval on the GSM Network, displaying the aircraft`s track and flight information in real time.

vfrTracker runs on S60 v3+ / Symbian OS mobile phones with an internal GPS or connection to an external BlueTooth GPS.

You also get a watch that when triggered will send your GPS co ords to a chosen recipient. Cant think of the name. But Google will know it !! :) :)

There is always the PLB's that is on the market, but I think that they are rather expensive. I have Google Maps on my Cellphone. it will track you to your nearest cellphone tower, giving you a range of about 3 to 5 kms around the tower where you could be. Makes for a much smaller search area. Also if you have a Google account you can hook it up to a couple of friends and family and it will show you on the map where they are using the same principle. Maybe an idea, and yes I accept that the cellphone is a bit irritating when it interferes with the radio, but maybe not a bad thing if it means you can be located quicker.
