Imagine if Bombardier would bring out a engine similar to the 503 but using their Evinrude/Johnson Direct injection system.
The result would be same power to weight, but fuel consumption closer to a 4 stroke

Re: Fact or Fiction - 503/582s discontinued
Has there been any indication as to how long they will continue to support their engines once production discontinued?

Here we go - the official response from Rotax:

So looks like the 582 will become the de facto standard.Your enquiry to Rotax in Austria has been referred to me.
Production of the 503 engine has been stopped last year already. Spares parts will continue to be available for the foreseeable future.
The 582 will continue to be available as there is still a reasonable demand, at the point there is no talk about stopping production.

was chatting to a Canadian aboot microlights and engines and I mentioned that Rottax had stopped making the 2 strokes... he was flabergasted and said that Bomadier makes 1000cc two strokes for snowmobiles... apparently they are the bomb.
Anyway everyone was well oiled at this stage... so will look into it in detail later.

You do know that bombardier is rotax?.
Probably the one on top he was talking about. Rotax has some very nice engines with fuel injection etc. with much higher outputs than the aircraft engines. Don't know why the flying industry is always sucking hind tit.

Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.
Re: Fact or Fiction - 503/582s discontinued
Rotax have a hotter version of the 582, sometimes called the 583, basically the same motor, exhaust tweaks and revs higher and produces around 80HP. However single ignition. Unfortunately the things that make it hotter are also the things that prevent it from being used in aviation, i.e. too high revving(requires a very high ratio gearbox), too heavy on fuel, single ignition etc. However I still believe that they do not want to impact the sales of the moerse expensive 912UL with a cheaper hotter motor.
