I was involved in some of the security during the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2003 that was much, much smaller than the 2010 football will be. There is a HUGE amount of planning and preparation that goes into these exercises to identify and rectify the possible problem areas including possible disruption to to Joe Public`s recreational schedule. Yes, there are some inconvenience to the public sometimes and sometimes things slip through the first time but that is the whole point of these exercises.

And trust me, it is when something goes wrong when people start asking: "why were there not three cars and seven security forces personnel at the airfield to stop the plane from taking off that caused this major incident?"

If we just give our co-operation and work with the exercise, the communication path stays wide open to be informed of and included in the planning of these events in the future.

Guys,
I chatted to a mate of mine at Ysterplaat, and he said that it is actually only a 15 mile radius of the stadiums! I'm not sure if this is correct, but he says it is...
The SAAF are also bring down a Rooivalk to deal with anyone who does not obey this rule.
Please don't bite my head off if the info is wrong, but I think this is right!
Ciao

Go to http://www.caa.co.za - on the front page are links to the situation. Go and look there - you'll clearly see 50nm.
oh also go look at this. http://www.avcom.co.za/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=45300

If you are not sure of the facts in serious matters like these, then do not post. This will only create uncertainty and confusion.

Trikenut, your friend might be confused with an absolute no-fly zone within the 50NM zone.

Have a look at the maps on CAA website. The actual stadium has its own ABSOLUTE NO FLY 5NM radius (10NM diameter) no-fly zone. Outside this zone you are still allowed to fly, subject to prior approval as explained in more detail by kb and stephan above. vhpy

Must say i thought this will be a bigger cock-up than it really is! Went for PPL training yesterday at FABB. File flightplan with authorisation number from the Sarg manning the airfield. Approved with a ref number, one radio call to JHB Information and off we went! On return let them know we are going in for a fullstop! End of story!
