Re: Scratch build a Trike

Worked on the engine mount based on the one used by OupaG. I needed a jig for the engine mount but unfortunately OupaG 'lost' his original jig during the last reorginazation of his workshop. I therefore used an old engine block and some plates that Oupa had laser cut to make a jig. IMG_8442s.jpg IMG...

Re: Replacing Bolts

Just some comments ( quoted from this site: http://www.synergysupplycm.com/pdf/Hydrogen%20Embrittlement%20-%20What%20it%20looks%20like.pdf ) There are several classic ind i c a t o r s o f a r e a l h y d r o g e n embrittlement failure. If any of these factors are missing, then the failure must be ...

Re: CAA and new, modified approvals.

Thanks for the link to the AvCom posts Mark. Yes I must agree that I prefer to deal with RAASA than having to deal with CAA. The difference between the 2 is that RAASA wants to help you but CAA want to do as little as possible, so if they can find any excuse what so ever not to help you they use it ...

Re: Scratch build a Trike

The pylon is now close to finished. The side plates were lasercut from 2mm stainless steel. The front and back is made from 50mmx5mm flat bar. I tried to bend the front and back myself but at the end I took it to a shop with a large roll bender. Stainless is a bit difficult to bend because it tends ...

Re: Building the new Bushbaby SAFARI

From all this I can only conclude that CAA is more interested in shuffling papers than in safety. No one with any common sense can think that this plane is less safe than any of the others, in fact quite the opposite. What is sad is that with all this frustration pilots will be want to avoid CAA as ...

Re: DISC BRAKES ON AQUILLA

I am convinced that brakes on the back wheels are safer than just front wheel brakes. I have flown both: on my Spirit II (front brake only) and on Oupa-G's DTA (drum brakes at the back as well). The question is do you need it? I think yes. 90% of the time that I land I probably do not need brakes at...

Re: Building the new Bushbaby SAFARI

It is a bit unfortunate that an organisation, such as MISASA, run by volunteers should be criticized in this way. These people volunteer their time for free and in general does an excellent job. Obviously there is always room for improvement, so maybe this should just be seen as criticism to keen th...

Re: size of seat frame

Grumpy maybe you can just measure your back-end from one side to the other vhpy OK I am building a trike so maybe I can give you some idea. The seat frame width, side to side, should be between 400 and 500mm. 440mm is sort of in the middle and should be good enough for most seats, except may in Grum...

Re: MISASA ARO / MOP PLUS New SACATS AND CARS Open for Comme

I think that MISASA comes under some unfair criticism due to the some peoples ignorance. I think that they are doing their best in the interests the microlight community and should get the acknowledgement that they deserve for their efforts. I think that if there is one thing that really irritate mo...

Re: Scratch build a Trike

As usual, I do not get to spend so much time on the trike as I would like. I am also preparing for our trip to Namibia with th trikes which uses up the little time that I do have. What I did spend a lot of time on recently is doing analysis of the pylon. The original design of the pylon required a l...

Re: Inflight Refuelling

kloot piloot Good question but it will not overfill if the system is air tight, it will not work either if the system is not airtight. My tank is air tight, I know because I have tested it by blowing some air into the breather and an hour later when the breather is opened it was still under pressure...

Re: Inflight Refuelling

While I have not tried it I think that there is an easier solution if your tank is below the 25l plastic container. You can simply take the breather from the main tank into the plastic container (down to the bottom) and add another breather to the container. For this you will have to make a special ...

Re: Scratch build a Trike

The frame is now standing by itself and it does not collapse if I sit in it! Most of the frame is still only tacked together. The final welding will only be done by a certified welder when I have all the parts fitted. IMG_frame2.jpg I will start with the pylon next. The basic structure of the pylon ...

Re: Scratch build a Trike

Making progress. Here is a 3D render of the frame and all its parts. naming3.jpg Lately most of the work is on the lathe. While I have done a lot of work on a wooden lathe when I was young, I have not done much work on a metal lathe so it takes a bit more time. lathe1.jpg Here I am busy with the bot...
