Re: Profile Tube Mounting Bolt

I am busy replacing most nuts and bolts. I removed the profile tube holder bolt yesterday. It is mildsteel from the looks of it and was badly rusted. I replaced it with a stainless steel bolt, ss washer and ss niloc... total cost R9.90. When last did you inspect this bolt? (^^) Beware of stainless ...

Re: Heavy Weather 19 Mar 2015

When you get a long, straight feature running radially out from the centre, then it is usually something obscuring the radar signal (crane, balloon, etc). So that long straight cell is just an artefact. The rest is normal convective weather.

Re: Rhino park ATC fly-inn with buffet Breakfast .14 March 2

Had a great laugh when the choppers carrying the ATC people departed... They got a right bollocking from an instructor a Zynkraal when they bombed low level straight through the circuit, right in front of a student on final approach.

Oh, the irony of it ;) .

What time is this do? Saturday, breakfast - so a civilised time would be 11ish. But we all know pilots aren't very civilised ;) .

Re: ASI, ALT and static yearly calibration/Checks

Yes, it's not just for flight schools but all aircraft (NTCA included). We share the same airspace as the other guys. This has always been a requirement. Go to part 44 CATS and see the annual inspection checklist in appendix A. I have not seen any formal notifications yet, except for letters direct...

Re: Rotax 582 Problem

Not sure about 2 strokes. In a 4 stroke, I would suspect excess carbon/lead deposits in the combustion chamber, and/or incorrect spark plug. Either of these will cause serious damage to the engine if not attended to.

Re: Why we tie down aircraft

Actually, if you look carefully, the aircraft was tied down. You can see the tie downs more clearly just before they snap. This is an interesting one, as the aircraft took off because it was tied down. If it wasn't tied down, there may well have been less damage. But this was an extreme case. No lig...

Re: Justin's Raven

Had a decent session for Cyril on Saturday morning. Did a couple of circuits at Zynkraal, then Kitty Hawk, then Rhino Park. Then a couple of solo circuits at Rhino. Getting the hang of this flying thing again ;) . Had a nasty run in with the weather on Saturday afternoon though. Wanted to test a twe...

Re: Justin's Raven

Hopefully I can start compiling some real numbers now. But being a short wing, we can't really compare it to the other engine installations. Jab 3300 has the same installed weight as a 912 or VW - just a few more ponies ;) . Take off and climb is like a rocket. Actual cruise is not much better (unle...

Re: Justin's Raven

I asked Carl the same question some time ago and he is also not a great fan of the speedwing. I also think what you might gain in speed is not worth the penalty on the stall.. Either way, its still a very enjoyable aircraft! And definitely worth its money!! J Definitely an amazing plane to fly - bu...

Re: Justin's Raven

Nice one! Ravens fly so nice and is a pleasure to land, so don't sweat too much..! Me and my better half had a nice Sunday afternoon cruise with my Raven Tailly and it was awesome! Enjoy flying your Raven... :) Such nice aircraft. Jacques The speed wing version isn't quite as pleasant - especially ...

Re: Justin's Raven

OK - tried every trick I could find today - all in one go. Added ramps over the vertical plates in front of #1 and #2. Drilled the air dam above #3 and #4 into swiss cheese. Added lips to the cowl exit area. Not sure which worked, but temps are OK now. With an OAT of 27C, I climbed 1000' with the hi...

Re: Justin's Raven

Justin those baffles are called "forget-me-not plates" and with good reason, you have now discovered why 8) I know Jabiru does not come with them, but I am 100% convinced if all Jabi engines have them , there will be no more cylinder and head issues Jean Yup. The Jabi installation manual doesn't re...
