Flying Poker is a fun event. Fly to different airfields, pick up a card at each then back to base where the cards are played out. Each participant (pilot and/or pax) puts in x amount to play and this goes into the jackpot for the winner of the poker.

CAA must have exhausted their supply of overseas factory visits which have been funding the CAA inefficiency for the last 3 years!

Secondly, I think that there may be a false sense of security in that there is this proposed Sport Category being talked about. IMHO I think that this section is going to be pretty far away until it becomes a reality. There is a process to be followed - Out for comment, Carcom, gazetted for comment...

you can also speak to the manager of the Pietermaritzburg Airport. They are very microlight friendly, and you can apply to erect your own hangar there. There are also a number of new hangars which are in the pipeline for erection at Maritzburg. Maybe you can get contact details from the manager, fo...

A good policy to have:-
Try to learn something new with every flight you take. If you go flying and you did not learn something on every single flight (even after many hours experience), then it is time to start doing just that....

FF I seem to remember someone saying that even trike training requires close to 40 hours, so is there any point in a microlight licence (as opposed to a PPL) at all then? Why do people bother to do a microlight licence at all when they can still fly a trike with a PPL, especially if microlight schoo...

Why do the CAA give microlight type designators to aircraft weighing more than 260kg, if they do not intend them to be flown on a MPL? This implies that they are approved for flight as a microlight. A few years ago, CAA said that they were not concerned about empty weight but only with all up weight...

A good way to secure a runway is to buy land and build an aviation estate. The problem is that the land has to be not too distant from where people work. And preferably not subject to land claims!! And it needs capital investment. And it needs to be in a non-industrial area - can't see too many peop...

Cato Ridge Airfield closing

Have just heard that the Cato Ridge Airfield is to be closed down. There has always been lots of politics regarding who owns and leases what land there, but now there are a whole lot of aviators are left without anywhere to fly from (first La Mercy being closed down and now Cato). The owners of a th...
