I was led to believe that on domestic flights it is acceptable, but because SAA is an international carrier they made the their rules universal for both domestic and international flights :( that's why I did not even bother to ask when I was on the SA...

This happened to me, the solution was a dirty filter/ or filter that had been washed in fuel (not by me) previously. This collapses the fibre of the K&N filter
