ZU-DBV, ZU-RHO & RAF 2000 hub bar bolt torque Threads Merged
Kolibri, come now, you have to admit that the RAF hub bar & winglet combination is a sexy looking piece of machined hardware. Ok, ok, ok – yes, before you can tell me so, the years have also taught me that the bit not revealed by the sexy look, is what is the really important part. (I first wrote ‘j...

Kolibri, Kolibri, Kolibri… You are at it again! Thank you for reposting the washer pics. Thank you for sending me the PDF backups of the deleted threads as well – it is useful for the record. (Very efficient of you, I might say.) If anybody should be interested in it, it is available. Incomplete pub...

ZU-DBV, ZU-RHO & RAF 2000 hub bar bolt torque Threads Merged
Hi all my fellow RAF owners/pilots. The following is for clarity on the bolt question. I am at this stage not claiming that the RAF NAS501-12 AFC bolt used in our hub bar assemblies is not good enough, even if it is not a certified item. It may, for all we know, be better than the AN12-34 used previ...

MODERATED The more I thought about the ZU-RHO accident report I realised that the AR failed to identify the root cause of the accident. Refer to my attached formal objection to the SACAA. Whether the SACAA is going to act on it or not, is not important to me. I notified them and my conscience is cle...

Re: Xenon trouble again
Hi Greg Even just a little bit of WRONG is not RIGHT! A blowtorch flame burns at several thousand deg C. So, even if applied carefully to a part, how much of that heat is transferred to the part and what is the temp distribution on the part? We cannot tell, so for safety critical parts it is a NO-GO...

Re: Xenon trouble again
Hi All I am horrified by the pic showing the use of a blow torch used to heat up the head. This is WRONG! – regardless of what your manual says. This is an uncontrolled process. The correct way, if you have to use heat at all, is a temperature controlled oven and an independent temperature measuring...

Re: XWind Dragon
Yesterday there was a fresh Westerly wind blowing here and I used the opportunity to try to work at my issue. According to my GPS the wind was 13kts and it was gusty and turbulent – normal for W and SW winds in our area. Not the weather I normally take off in to have fun. Glen, I put your theory to ...

Re: XWind Dragon
Thanks for your input Glen - appreciated. What you say makes sense and I will have to sort this demon out by doing some work in strong wind. I will need to convince myself/make very sure that my ‘roll over feeling’ is indeed merely a downwind sliding or skidding as you suggest. That will take a lot ...

Re: XWind Dragon
Vertical Tango, with regard to your comment about us Capies being good at mountain flying – I would rather think it is a matter of with time we get better at avoidance. I do not have a ready answer to your question but I can tell you how it felt. It felt like the xwind was ‘getting under my wing’ an...

I had a nasty experience and would like to share, out of humility – maybe it can be of use to someone some day. On the 4th January Andre Gruindelingh, my partner in the Bantam, and I decided to have breakfast at FASH flying from Pearly Beach airstrip – he in the Bantam and I in the RAF. We checked t...

Re: RAF Flight Behaviour
After my last post, I have had some good calls and some bad telephone calls in this regard. I would like everyone who is concerned with this subject to understand where I am coming from. I love my RAF and I enjoy her very much and I don’t want to be flying and worrying about what I don’t know. My in...
